Anyone know of software that'll plot heatmaps?

Does anyone know of graphing software that'll plot heatmaps? I'm looking for something that'll do an XY scatter plot with the color of the dots dependent on a Z value.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Matlab will probably do that, I bet you were hoping for something cheaper though

Seconding R, SciLab, Matlab.

You might have luck with Octave but I'd bet SciLab is better.

Also:

(free) possibly NCARG,
possibly some abortion with EXCEL.
Open Office graphics / Impress maybe but I wouldn't hold my breath.

If none of the free ones mentioned work pipe up again and I'll look through my notes of others, I've got quite a few bookmarked.
