Anyone Know of a GOOD Used Car web-site?

Like many peeps, I'd like to buy a good used car for a good price but it seems like 90%+ of the used car listings on the web are from dealerships. And of course the dealerships pay a low price and mark it up 30%-40% or more before they turn around and re-sell the car.

I neither need nor want "the middleman" to help me out nor am I willing to pay them.

Are used car buyers STUCK with the above system or is there a web-site out there with MOSTLY private party sellers?

Thanks,

Budarow

Check your local newspaper's website. Lots of them have their classifieds section online. There is always Craigslist as well.

From my experience, many "private" sellers are worse about overvaluing their crap than dealers.

That being said, your local newspaper site should have a classified section that lets you search by "classifieds" only and keeps out the commercial dealers.

plenty of dealers place inconspicuous listings in the classifieds, as well. i actually bought a car from a subaru dealership where the ad was just a basic listing of the car, mileage, condition, and a phone number, in with all the others.

i think a good bet is craigslist. plenty of dealer cars show up there, but you can almost always tell by the format of the posting, the pics (is it in a driveway? or on a lot with "MUST SEE!" written on the window?), and often the ad will simply specify. i think most dealers in the bay area actually subscribe to a service that places their ads on craigslist, because they almost all use an identical format, regardless of make or location.
