Hey all

I have my main cpu in the basement, and there is another cpu on the second floor. Currently, I have a network cable going outside where a cable line goes outside, and then it goes back into the house outside of the second floor. This does work, but it doesn't look good at all, and I wonder how well the cables will last outside.

How can I run them up through the walls?

Thanks!

You 'd have to cut a hole in the wall on each end big enough for the plate and box the jack(s) will go into. If you know there are no wires right there use an electric drill to drill a hole between the floors, inside the wall. Use a "fishtape" down the wall. Tape the cable to it(or use some string) to pull the cable up to the second floor. You might end up making a mess with the walls if you have to cut them bigger than the faceplates to get a drill near the base of it. So you might have to patch and repaint.

It's a pain in the ass, but can be done. Do you have a full two story or a 1.5 story?

it is a two story bungalo....the good thing is that the second floor is just one big bedroom, and there is storage/attic on both sides of it where the ceiling slants too much, so making hole's isn't really a big deal....how do I know, from the attic, where the walls are below?

It's like a 1.5 story. I find it easier as you can go into the storage areas to do the "damage". Measuring or estimating is your best bet. Are the basement ceilings false, sheetrocked or unfinished? If false or unfinished, drill through that plate first to the main floor, then find where you "think" that area is on the second floor then run the fish tape down the wall.

what is a fishtape?

the ceiling in my basement is wide open, as I am remodeling it now....I have most of the drywall up, a whole bunch of outlets, (grounded finally!), a new circuit just for the basement, a new sink/vanity....going to be nice when its done!

thanks for the suggestions by the way..

If you can, go through closets to hide the visible wire. You can pull baseboards if you have to, and then put them back.
Also, if you have to, you can put cable between baseboard and rug (if there IS a rug), or pull up the end of the rug and run it underneath.

I pulled a line 2 floors to my family room which is in the basement to connect up my kids puter with mine by dropping it through a cold air return duct. worked perfectly simple quick and no damaged drywall.

which leads to another problem with the house....there is no cold air return duct on the second floor...and yes, it is very cold up there in the winter, and very warm in the summer!
