I'm a busy guy, I don't have time to read threads, just post in them.:awe:

Anyway, wish I could help. Freaking love the things, but luckily I do not have any allergies to worry about. I do, however, wish more places offered them. Disappointingly few number of places do around here.

KT

Yeah, they were everywhere when I lived in the south, but New Englanders just look at you weird when you ask for them

Looks like it doesn't come with a hand guard, but you probably now have 5 of them lieing around.

Problem for me is food allergies. I can't do corn, kiddo can't do soy. Guess what they fry everything in? :awe:

That and I don't think my current state even has a Chick-fil-A...:(

Chick-Fil-A always fried everything in peanut oil, FWIW. You should move. The only down side to Chick-Fil-A is once you eat there, you crave it mostly on Sundays...when they're closed. :(

Yeah, the north stinks for fast food restaurants - No Chickfila, no Waffle Houses, no Carl's Jr/Hardees, and none even of the crappier ones like In & Out Burger. We just barely got a 5 Guy's, but my kiddo has a nut/soy allergy, so that's out. Can't win

Ahah, now we're making some progress - "criss cut" fries:

http://keamistry.blogspot.com/2011/02/how-to-make-crisscut-fries.html

Time to find a "multi-functional vegetable cutter" haha!

I think I found it:

http://www.amazon.com/MultiFunctiona.../dp/B00INZF324

Under $8 shipped. Downside is 14 to 28 days shipping (I'm assuming direct from China). I'll let you guys know in a month! :awe:

Arrived today. Not quite the same device. There's no hand guard; fortunately I have one from another portable mandoline. However, the blade is like a millimeter too low - it's SUPER hard to get a clean cut on it, it just kind of shreds the potato. This is the best I've gotten so far:

Might just take some practice (or some pliers). I'll keep tinkering. It's also not very easy to use - it feels like it's made out of recycled plastic bottles (probably with BPA haha) & is not a nice, solid, smooth machine for quickly julienning veggies.

Apparently a crinkle-cut fry is a waffle fry without holes, then a waffle fry is a crinkle-cut fry with holes. The difference is that you rotate them on the slicer; rotating them introduces the holes & a criss-cut waffle pattern. These guys got the hang of it using the manual slicer, but I haven't been able to get that precise by hand yet:

2 things you can't realistic make at home without buying WTFBBQSAUCE expensive equipment.

1. Waffle Fries
2. Sonic "Pellet Ice"

Sadly I love both, but I gave up on both after years of off and on looking and hoping.

I'm beginning to believe that. It's funny that you looked into Sonic pellet ice...I did too. Even tried the freezer trays, no luck. They do have a "consumer" model, the Scotsman Ice Dispenser MDT2C12, but it's over three grand:

I just have to figure out how to roll that into my mortgage when I move...:hmm:

As mentioned several times earlier in this thread, I own a several mandolines and also had a shootout with friend's mandolines. Unfortunately, none are able to make a proper waffle fry: criss-cut, has holes, not too thin. Even on the models with adjustable blades, the thickness of the cutter isn't such that you can get holes AND a decently thick fry. You can get holes, but you get something that's nearly as thin as a potato chip.

I feel a Kickstarter project coming on.

what is pellet ice and why is it desirable? Is this some sort of ice cream thingy, or is it just ice?

I hate ice in nearly all beverages. Nor sure why people still do that, tbh....

Pellet ice, aka nugget ice, is small round capsules of ice. They make drinks fun & are fun to crunch on. It's just ice, not a dessert. They're used for drinks at Sonic's: (the only good thing there FYI)

I have this curse where everything I really like isn't do-able at home unless you're rich or really careless with money. I dunno if it's legit but I've seen the Scotman's for just over $2,000. Expensive but much better than 3g's lol. It's weird that no other company makes a more reasonably priced maker. While it is a niche market, when I drove by a Sonics the other day the big ass billboard I could see from the freeway was advertising bags of their ice for $1.99. So obviously people must like it.

My son has soy, peanut, and gluten allergies as well. The Chick-fil-A locally is still ok for him to eat. They have two separate fryers, one for chicken which uses peanut oil, the other was only for the fries and used vegetable oil. He loves getting grilled nuggets, waffle fries, and a lemonade. That is the only type of food he can eat that other kids generally eat.

it's user's error...you are supposed to turn the potato 90degrees every time you make a pass.
