Anyone know how to get core off PCB?

hey, i've got a broken 3dfx v3 card. i'd like to make a keychain out of it, and i really want to get the core off the pcb. anyone have any ideas on how to do this cleanly? thanks

Cleanly, I dunno. Not tooooo messy, but not real clean, get a propane torch and heat the back side...yeah it'll smell real nice...

Let me combine the two prior posts 🙂 Desolder with a propane torch. Just torch the back end of the chip, it should heat up enough to melt all the solder, then just tap the edge of teh card on the ground and it will probably just fall out.

hehe, thanks all. after using a torch for a while, i got funny smeels, 2 broken RAM chips, a dizzy head, some blackened hands, a broken in 2 charred voodoo, and the core! 🙂 going to make keychain. thanks for all the help!

See, I can post useful info! And dang it Soybomb, stop trying to capitalize off my post! 😛😉

Two of the nastiest smells: burnt PCB & cutting PCB with a dremel...

Two things right in one thread...woot!

I am assuming it is a BGA type chip. Unless you have a hot air gun with a narrow tip, the torch method is the best (assuming you could care less about the PCB). Go at the board from the back side, with the chip facing down (let gravity work with you). You might want to get something small that will fit under a corner of the chip, and LIGHTLY pry on the chip as you heat.

Good luck and don't burn yourself or your house
