Anyone know how to find out someone's SSN?

Sundog

Hmmmmm...we can not find my duaghter's social security card and I am required to fill in her SSN number on the 1040A tax form to use the dependent deduction.🙁

Anyone know how to find out, or who to contact?

Does that mean that if your child doesn't have a SSN you can't get the deduction?

(and contrary to popular belief, you are NOT required to have a SSN, or get your kids SSNs)

Well from experience the IRS does not care about this if it is true. Last year I did not fill out the SSN and we got a letter saying that we owed because they didn't allow her as a deduction. We provided the SSN over the phone and it was OK then (I checked last years tax filing for her SSN, but because we gave it over the phone it was not on our hardcopy🙁)

Hogwash!

There are some situations where SSN is REQUIRED.

IRS!
Commercial Drivers License in MOST states.
A student loan.
An IRA!
Unemployment compensation in MOST states.
Workers' Compensation.
Veterans Benefits.
Military ID card!!!!
A College ID card!!

and probably a hundred more!

Where my daughter is completing her Masters Degree, the ONLY way to get her grades online is with her SSN!!!, birthdate & password. No exceptions!

Does anybody REALLY understand why there are a few confused people who actually think they're being watched? LOL...I doubt they have anything that somebody really wants. Paranoia extreme!

Most likely it's a student ID# used by the school for tracking purposes. Most schools will use the SSN as the ID#. However, if you do not have an SSN, you can be assigned a regular ID#. This is what International students do all the time.
