I've got an 01 Civic. Just rolled 10,000 miles and the maintanance required light on the dash is on. I called the dealer, they said "it's time for your 10,000 service!" Which consists of an oil change and tire rotation for $90, vaseline not inlcuded. He also said, yeah, just drop by and we'll clear the light for you. Screw that, it's so easy to change the oil on this car a kid could do it (and probably would if I took it in)
Plus, it's a pain for me to get to the dealership, and I highly doubt they'll "get right to it" if I "drop by"

So, does anyone know the procedure for clearing this light?

I know in my Olds, you have to do something like hold the break down and another button for 10 sec during startup.

thanks

hey, I had the same thing happen to me. The maintenance light was on so I go in for service which consisted of checking up on the breaks, oil change, other crap, and a car wash for $90. What a rip off. I'm supposed to go in again but I won't.

On the Accord, you hold down the trip odometer button while turning on. Hold it down for like around 10 secs, then turn off. I imagine it would be same thing with Civic.

Dude, $90 for oil change and tire rotation? That's like highway robbery.

On my 97 Accord, there is a little green light that turns orange. There is a little rectangular hole next to it, you use the ignition key and poke it in that hole and it resets the light to green.

Try it.

My dad showed me how to change the oil in our car for the first time a few weeks ago. After I got done, I was like "They charge $30 for this?"

$90 is insane. Hell, paying $5 isn't worth it - I would rather do it myself for free.

I tell you what's highway robbery, $30 for just the oil change! that's what it is if you don't have a coupon, found that out the hard way at 4000 miles.

I know with VW's they turn off the light by using one of the little handheld computers or attach it to one of the big diagnostic computers.

Suffice it to say, with newer cars you generally can't turn off the check engine light without going to the dealer.

By the way, if you don't get the service done you'll likely void your warranty.

Electrical tape.

Cut off a little square to cover up any offending lights. "Maintenance Required." "Service Engine Soon" "Fasten Seat Belt" "Engine Malfunction" "Airbag failure" Who needs 'em? :D

Holding down the trip odometer button did the trick, thank you so much. The car is for sale and starts in the paper tomorrow (anyone in the Indianapolis area need a 01 Civic EX sedan?)
