Not sure about Win XP, But in Win2k, you just copy all the *.dbx files. Each of your mail folders have a *.dbx file. Ex: inbox.dbx, outbox.dbx...

Outlook Express keeps email in various .dbx files. Because each computer may be slightly different due to the way user accounts are set up, the easiest way to find the files is to do a search for .dbx files. Your search should lead you to a directory that contains a bunch of .dbx files like inbox, sent, deleted, etc. Copy these files to a directory of your choice on another hard drive, CDR, etc. (they will be too big to fit on floppies). After reformatting, use the Import Messages function of Outlook Express (File, Import, Messages, Outlook Express) , and point it at the directory where you copied the .dbx files. Let the import process finish and you will then be able to access your saved email.

Don't forget to export your account settings, too (Tools-Accounts) and your message filters if you have any (I think you can export those..?) I have 5 mail accounts and reinstalling windows/outlook gets to be a real pain.
