when you say "average PC user" do you mean, average person who knows how to use their PC (though not necessarely a geek) ... or average person who happens to attempt to use one, though they don't know WTF they are doing ???

for part 1 ... I'd say anywhere from once every 2 years to twice a year ... (i'm counting small upgrades or large upgrades)
for part 2 ... they do not realize they can upgrade ... they prefer to buy a full system every 5 or 6 years.

For Vonkhan, every week :p

For me, I guess every 4-5 months I do an overhaul.

what counts as an upgrade? A new hard drive? Monitor? New rig all together? When it breaks or when they want something faster?

The majority of computer users I know don't really upgrade. Some family members of mine do upgrade often. I've been using the same system 95% unchanged for about a year now. I have no reason to upgrade. My Inspiron 8200 does everything I need it to and does it perfectly fine.

There is an inverse relationship between the number of upgrades to one's pc and the number of times they have sex.

Hmm... =|... say it out loud and it's "equals pipe." In C, the pipe means an OR operator, right? So maybe he's saying that his post is equal to OR. What is OR? Without variables to put on either side, it really represents choice. Perhaps it's an existential statement about how his very words represent choice. Whose choice? His to write them? Or maybe ours to read them? But wait! It's his signature! By the time you read it, you've already read his whole previous post... so you have no choice whether or not to read it! Perhaps he's making a dramatic philosophical statement: you have no choice! His post, which you must have read, represents a choice that was really already made for you! Thus, his signature must question the entire concept of free will.

Or maybe it's just an expressionless smiley face, in which case I hate him.

Can I offer you some beachfront property in lovely Kansas?
Looks like Millennium taught you something new.

Evidently I did, because I used that same line ON MAME back in the Aimster thread. Get some orginal material kid.

Talk about a thief and a liar. Sure you aren't related to Aimster?

lol!

anyhow, the average household buys a new computer every 3 years, I remember reading that as an official statistic somewhere, but of course that number probably heavily favors rich people who do it much more often than the poor. I personally add new components as time goes on (usually 1 swap every six months), slowly retiring older components.

i figure someone like my mom is an "average" user. email/wordprocessing/office apps etc.

she gets an upgrade when i upgrade and hand down parts which happens often :) her system is getting pretty damn fast for email and wordprocessing. if i didn't hand down parts she'd never upgrade.
