Anyone know anything at all about bowling balls?

I started hanging out with some guys at work, and they really like bowling. I've been maybe 10 times, so I suck. I'd like to get a sub-$100 ball that is acutally made for me. The ones at the lanes suck, the fingers are always too small (especially the thumb).

Can anyone recommend anything? How do I go about getting the correct size for the holes?

Thanks.
Chris

Go to a store, or the pro-shop (if they have one) at the lane. They'll take all the measurements for the finger holes and recommend a ball.

I don't really know .. but my buddy has pretty big hands and last time we went he bowled a 239 with the bowling alleys 14 pounder .. it was a pretty messed up ball but he could get his fingers in it.. and he cranks it good too.

don't know about custom balls though .. that's too rich for me.

yeah .. I can always find a ball that fits me at the lane .. the thing I don't like about em is the sticky stuff that's inside the holes. The place I go has like .. 60 lanes, and they are pretty good and have lots of balls so you can usually find some decent ones..

One of the all-time best beginner balls is the Columbia White Dot. Comes in many different colors.

If you get serious, the White Dot won't do, because it won't hook unless the lanes are completely dry. Most people nowadays use it for a spare ball for corner pins.

If you are meaning to get at least somewhat serious about bowling, you might want to look into a used urethane ball. That's a great place to start. That's the only way you can get a quality, high-performance ball for less than 100 bucks.

When you get even more, ready-to-join-a-league-type serious, you'll need reactive urethane, or a particle ball. Then you're talking 250+ bucks.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
I used to work in a pro shop awhile back.

Wow, thanks for the info, this is exactly what I was looking for. Is there a good site for these things? As far as the used ball, do you know of anywhere that I could find one?

I know there isn't a shop here, and I don't think there is one in Bloomington.

There isn't a shop in your local bowling center?

You really don't want to buy a ball online. Someone needs to measure your finger span properly or the ball won't fit.

Also: Never, Never, Never buy a ball from Kmart, a sporting goods store, etc. Nobody there knows ANYTHING about bowling, the balls are 3rd rate, and you'd be better off drilling the holes yourself than having someone at one of those places drill it.

Most pro shops have used balls for sale. Lots of pro shop owners try every new ball that comes out so they can tell people what the balls will do. They use them for awhile, then plug them up and sell them. All the bowling centers around here have pro shops, and every one has used equipment for sale.

Good luck.

I actually have no idea. I've only been to the one here in Bedford once, and it was *packed* and it was trance night or something like that and it looked like a 2nd class dance club. Didn't pay any attention 🙂

We're going tonight, I'll check

This is what I was thinking of doing. Thanks

Lol, so I hear. I guess it'd be like buying a performace part for a hotrod there.

Thanks a lot, man.
