Anyone know anything about older Mercedes?

Ok sorry for another in the long line of car threads but you guys always seem to come through so I thought I would give it a try. I am looking at buying my first car soon and I had my eye on a few different ones including some older Mercedes-Benz's. In particular the 450SL and the 280SE. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with either of these, or any other 70's Benzs. Also do you know any sites that talk about them in depth or any good bulliten boards to visit? Thanks.

Stifko, how does you dad like the 190E? If I dont get one of the older Mercedes, I might look at either a 190E or 300E/SEL.

Ya know what? A 70's MB, when it comes own to it, will be just like most other really old cars, the only parts will be very expensive.

Unless you already know a lot about cars (I'm talking like your dad's a mechanic kind of knowledge) and you have great mechanical inclination, you're looking at a very poor choice for a first car, especially if you expect it to be driveable most of the time.

You should look for a newer car. Old cars always require a good amount of TLC.

squirrelman, He loves it. Its the nicest ride that he has ever had. Dad is having a hard time getting used to an automatic transmission, but that will work out, hehehe. Reminds me of that scene from a Cheech & Chong movie, anyway, its got low miles and feels great on the road. They make very solid and quality cars. It was a good find.

Garfang, That is what I figured. I was just checking to make sure though, because I really like the style of some of the older mercedes. I guess I will just have to wait until I make more money. For now I will probably get either a Late 80s/Early 90s 300E/SEL or BMW 3 or 5 series. Thanks for the input everyone.

Just to be more clear, I'm not saying it will definitely be bad. Assuming that you want a car with the most uptime and the lowest possible repair cost, the danger in only looking for a specific make and model is inversely proportional to your budget. If you're only going to spend a few grand, you should be looking for a car (and keep your options open) that's been well maintained. Any halfway decent mechanic knows one when he sees one. One '86 300E for example, might be a gem, while another is a POS needing thousands in repairs to bring it up to par. Finding a diamond in the rough can be kind of rough. You're half shopping for a good car and half shopping for a good previous owner who took care of things.
