My aunt and boss both have Miatas. My boss has a convertable.

As for the cars, I don't like them, or own one, so I can't help. They do make convertables though.

The Miata is technically a roadster. It's a pretty thin line, but you can easily tell a roadster from a convertible.

Convertible:

BMW 3-Series
Mercedes CLK
Chrysler Sebring
Ford Mustang
Chevy Camaro

Roadster:

Audi TT
Mercedes SLK
BMW Z3
Porsche Boxster
Mazda Miata
Toyota MR2 Spyder
Chevy Corvette


Roadsters are TYPICALLY 2 seaters. Convertibles are TYPICALLY 4 seaters.

More seriously though, if being cheap is the most important thing to you, then get a set ot snow chains (if they are legal in your area). Chains are a hassle to put on and take off, but they are probably the least expensive solution. As far as snow tires go, Bridgestone Blizzaks are widely regarded as the best snow tire, especially if you get a studded version. Blizzaks will probably run $80-$100 per tire though.

perhaps car people have a weird lingo thing going on, but it would seem to me that all roadsters are convertibles, but not all convertibles are roadsters. the only requirement to be a convertible is to have an open top, per the dictionary definition.

hmm, i've never had any experience with chains. how long do they take to put on? i would hate to have to pull over in the middle of the highway when it's 15 degrees outside and put them on by myself..

No, the 912 is the crappiest Porsche ever built. The 914 is the second crappiest Porsche ever built. Get it straight man. My only problem with the Miata is that since it's weathertight, has a decent heater, and everything works every time, it must therefore not be a true roadster.

It's ironic that a Miata thread was started today. Earlier I went down the Mazda dealership, prior to seeing this thread, and I drove a Miata LS. Maybe I'll start another Miata thread and post my experience. Amazing car. I had no idea how cool that little car is.

yes! i mean, most people look at it and think it's a girls car, but it drives and handles like nothing else! even the "manliest" and harriest of hardcore enthusiasts wouldn't doubt it's ability on the track. people supercharge and mod these things like crazy!! i've even heard they've swapped 5.0 mustang engines into the thing!
