Anyone know anything about Guangzhou, China

I'll be there in about a month. I'll let you know if you're traveling after that.

Incidentally, the White Swan hotel is supposed to be very nice.

Hey, I resemble that remark! 😉 I'm half-Chinese, but I've spent less than 2 weeks in China/Taiwan in my whole life. I'm trying to learn Mandarin (so I really hope they speak it in Guangzhou).

Might actually be predominantly Cantonese, but that makes little difference to me since it's all Chinese to my ears! Oddly, I will probably know some of the characters because kanji is based on the same characters though I understand they are slightly different.

Anyway, you might want to PM me at the end of the year. We're getting our baby girl in Changsha and have to visit Guangzhou for the US Consulate so when we get back, I'll have my hands full and likely won't be doing much online for awhile!

i went to guangzhou about 2 years ago during the fall. my general impression was pretty good. i didnt really get a chance to go around locally and do anything myself, but everything seemed nice. great industrial metro (huge and very dense). lots of electronics, and GREAT food. ive been all over china except the very southwest and the cuisine in guangzhou leaves a real distinct memory. its where most of the common "chinese" food in the states originate from.

you would definately want to check out the sun yatsen memorial hall. his tomb is actually in nanjing, but the memorial hall has a nice theater and statue and everything. isnt the most beautiful city though, too dense and lots of pollution.

Why arn't you banned yet?

Did you know how easy it is to get a good paying job in Asia?

I've a buddy who is raking it in in S Korea, teaching basic english to 15 yr olds.

He has a law degree (and passed his bar, which according to him is tougher), and can make better money over there.

And considering that the Chinese gov't has pegged it's Yuan to your dollar, I imagine that Americans can make good cash over there. (Us Canucks can't, since you dollar is plunging.)

Your posts suck. I wonder why you havn't been banned yet. Or why no one has burned you IRL.

watch out for cab drivers, hair salons, and cops. crooks are everywhere, just play it safe and don't get suckered.

anyways. enjoy the food thur. don't buy anything there coz they are all counterfeits

I think they also speak Cantonese in Guangdong, which is where my parents came from.

Pardon me for having worked like a dog to graduate school, get a decent-paying job, and keep it in my pants so I don't have to pay child-support. 😛

The White Swan Hotel is awesome. My best friend's grandfather is the architect that designed the place. Needless to say, we got a free room when we went. The city itself is quite nice. Its just like any other large city. The traffic absolutely insance. I could never imagine driving there.

About the cops; I remember once our cab got stopped by the cops and they wanted to see our ID/passports (I was with my friend and his dad; his dad lives there). Not sure if there was money exchanged or not.

Taxi is the only way to get around (its cheap so might as well). Lots of electronics and counterfit stuffs. Can't forget all the pirated cds😉

Also, food places open till the early hours of the morning. The city never sleeps... or stops eating for that matter. 😀

You will have no problems if you only know Mandarin. It is the official language of China after all. However, Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong province, which is pretty much the original capital of the Cantonese dialect, unless I'm mistaken.

Yes, it is one of the better known hotels over there. It overlooks the Pearl River IIRC. Last time I went there I stayed at a rather new hotel (Tianlun, http://www.sinohotel.com/hotel/hotel.html?hid=1015) which was pretty well furnished and competitively priced. Free broadband too, but the connection was pretty flaky.
