Anyone know about fixing dishwashers???

It runs, but water doesn't come in to it. I'm thinking the water pump/valve/etc is busted in it.

Anyone have any experience getting them repaired? Or am I stuck spending the morning shopping for a dishwasher tomorrow?

And if I am, how hard is it to install? Thinking it might be worth my while to hit Costco...although most home improvement places will install and remove the old for a nominal fee IIRC....

Sounds like the solenoid has ceased to function, assuming that's how the water input is controlled..

Usually there's a plastic float valve on the floor of the main dishwasher compartment. Usually they're on the floor near where the water inlet is (which is usually on a wall). It may be about half the size of a small can of soup, with a domed top.

It controls the water flow.

Slowly over time they get all fouled with calcium deposits & crud so they can't freely slide up & down anymore like they're supposed to.

Remove its cover by undoing a bolt or two, usually plainly visible beside the cover. Then you can pull out its inside parts. These are the parts that must be able to freely slide up & down.

Just clean them real good and reinstall.

If this is the source of your problem (likely it is) then after a good float valve cleaning your dishwasher will work like new again. Start-to-finish=maybe 10 to 15 minutes.

My float valve can be seen easily and I can hear the click when I move it up and down. Check for movement , silverware , or debris blocking it.

Ours is broke!

Pay the dishwasher if he/she is broke!!!!!

Alas,I have to wash my own dishes,by hand.😉

Have you tried priming the pump? Sometimes the pump runs dry and needs to be primed. Pour a gallon of water in the bottom and try again.

if its the pump then it's gonna cost around $80 to get a new one, and you can replace it yourself. Been there, done that. Its not hard.

For $80 you might as well buy a new dishwasher. You can get a cheap one for under $200. I bought a Whirlpool stainless steel model for around $350 last summer and installed it myself. It's easy enough to install. My old one was 10 years old and it leaked from the door seal. I figured it made more sense to replace it than to try and have it repaired.

Interesting info on the float valve. I'll check it out today.

Also, I actually put some water in to it manually last night and it seemed to work.

how did you figure that? 😕

if your car needs an oil change do you buy a new car?

...how did you figure that?

Our KitchenAid dishwasher just hit twenty years old. Hasn't given us one lick of trouble in all that time, but if the least problem occured now, it would probably be replaced. Mostly because I want something quieter, but also the fact that it's got to be close to its expiration point. She's used no less than twice per week, so we've gotten our money's worth out of it.

Another thing:

THis makes your dishwasher really quiet. Get a bunch of that type of box packing material like they use for large industrial & military electronics items. Not stiff white styrofoam. I use the kind that's pink color, firm but not rigid, usually in fairly thick pieces. I don't know what it's called or how to describe it better, but it's a type of foam.

Put enough of that on the top & sides of the exterior to make your dw fit snugly in its slot. I just set it on there loosely, and the dishwasher's snugness in its slot holds it on. Or maybe you can find large enough pieces to drape over the top so it hangs down on the sides.

It makes great sound insulation, far better than the little bit of extra sound insulation you pay extra for on a higher end machine.

And final suggestion: while your head is inside your dw, take a couple of minutes to pop out the drain cover & check for anything like lettuce, bottle labels, etc. that might be under the screen, to prevent potential future clogs. Your dw will run like new.
