I am going to pick up a small popcorn popper machine for movie nights:

linkage

Got any good recipes? Cheesy popcorn, good buttery popcorn, carmel corn, etc.

I read that title as something entirely different. Basically I read the word "popcorn" as a four letter word without the "opc".

the stir crazy popcorn popper is the best thing ever. my dad picked up one 12 or 13 years ago, and when west bend decided to take them off the market frantically searched everywhere for another (in case his broke).

Kettle corn:

1/2 cup kernels
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup oil

Put all of them in your popper and constantly stir / shake until everything is popped.

Oh, and FWIW, I think that the Whirley Pop will never let you down. That other popper seems like it would be a PITA to clean.

I like my food spicy. Thus, I like my popcorn spicy.

I like to have ~5 flavors of butter for a textured taste. I'll use a small pat of real butter, tub spreadable butter, squeeable butter, butter flavoring crystals, and a product called popcorn butter salt. I don't add any more butter this way than I would have otherwise, all five are just small little doses. But you just get a much more deep flavor this way.

To that I usually add most or all of the following:
[*]Garlic powder/garlic salt.
[*]Dried onion (added to the butters when I melt the butters, so the onion softens up).
[*]Freshly ground pepper.
[*]A dash of cayenne pepper.
[*]Salt if necessary.

Sometimes I'll go all out and add other spices for a unique taste. But what I listed above is a wonderful base on its own. I frequently get requests for my popcorn when I'm with friends/family. Heck, I've gotten people who hate popcorn to request that I make it.

Don't use a popper just user a normal pot. Put some oil on the bottom, put down a layer of popcorn, add some salt or wahtever... and let 'er rip.

What about actual corn and butter additives? I want that movie theater popcorn and I have never been able to make anything like it. Is there a special brand of corn seeds, or butter flavor?

You have to try Hurricane Popcorn. It's a local favorite in Hawaii.
It's popcorn with toasted Rice Crackers and Seasoned Seaweeds added in.
You can get the toppings here

Movie popcorn flavoring is highly carcinogenic BTW.

as a former head projectionist/master popcorn maker i can say there are 2 things that make movie theatre popcorn so good. the first is the oil and we used coconut oil which is very unhealthy. the second is the (yellow) popcorn salt which is added to the oil and seed before popping.

Wow, never saw that coming. Ok, let me rephrase.......is it difficult to find the salt that comes like micro thin balls where its almost sand-like? I hate regular salt.

Yum, coconut oil is the bomb.

I guess if you make the butter from scratch, you are at least limiting the harmful effect that way. :)

Look for popcorn salt, it is in every supermarket.
For an even finer salt, look for "butter salt". It is the salt they add to butter, so it must be imperceivably small grains to keep the butter smooth. But I think butter salt is very hard to find. Popcorn salt works nearly as well.

Do they sell coconut oil at local stores too?
