Or more particularly, Azek rail?
If so, would you mind helping me figure out how to space the rail posts for the deck I am building? I have a 20' span on one side and my supplier says that if I cheat in a couple inches on each end, I can get away with three 6' rail kits for that section. I'm sure I'm having a brain fart but I can't seem to figure out the proper spacing for that. Would one of you mind checking my math and figure out where I am going wrong?
20' = 240"
Each post sleeve is 5.5" (outer edge to edge).
Three 6' sections = 4 posts - 1LC, 1LM, 1RM, 1RC (L = Left, C= center, M = middle)
4 post sleeves = 4*5.5" = 22 inches of the 240" that is spanned by the post sleeves.
240" - 22" = 218" = distance remaining that must be spanned by rail (between posts)
218" = 18' 2"
So it seems that if I cheat the LC and RC posts in by 1 inch I should be ok. So:
left corner of LC placed 1" in from left corner - spans from 1"-6.5";
left edge of LM placed at 78.5" (6' from the right edge of LC) - spans from 78.5 -84";
left edge of RM placed at 156" (6' from the right edge of LM) - spans from 156 -161.5
Left edge of RC placed at 233.5 (6' from the right edge of RM) - spans from 161.5-239"
Something ain't right. Why am I off by an inch?
Nevermind - Man I am a dumbass. The reason I am off by an inch is because I am cheating the right post in by one inch.
DOH!
Jeebus I hate construction math.
