anyone installed a K&N air filter?

Things to consider, which is why I never use them:

K&N cone filters have actually decreased HP in many engines because they pull air from the middle of the engine compartment where it's hotter.

K&N filters have been known (by many users) to pass more dirt into your engine over OEM filters.

That's why cone intakes yield more power (if any) at high speeds becuase the air is cooler in the engine bay, while CAI perform better at lower speeds.
 
There are obviously a lot of conflicting opinions both ways. It's one of those things where you'll have a VERY hard time finding actual facts.

All I can share is my anecdotal advice - had one on my '79 280ZX for 40,000 miles, have had one on my 91 300 ZXTT for 60,000 miles, and have had one on my Jeep for 10,000 miles.

No sign of any "bad things" happening due to the K&N. Seems to be working great. Minor performance difference. I clean and re-oil it about every 2 years.
 
I have a KKM filter It was on the car when I got it, so I can tell you from adam whether or not there was a performance. Nevertheless, this IS a true CAI systems as it pulls the air from the wheel well.

i have had about the same experience with my generation 2 kit that is intalled on my F150. It seems to make a bit of a difference when towing, but other than that... nothing major.
 
To clarify. Nothing wet should ever be put in your air intake system. Yes, it does need to be cleaned (with water/cleaner) and then treated with K&N fluid, but it should be dry before going back into your car. If wet, it will fark up your MAF and potentially many other things. Now it does make use of the fluid to filter the air, hence the "wet" terminology, but just to be clear, be sure it is DRY before putting back in.

That being said, my K&N filters have been a nice, long-lasting air filter. Can't speak that they've added much, if any power, but they work quite well, have less frequent changes, and are environmentally friendly.
