Got my oil changed over the weekend and the guy said I'll probably need a new air filter soon (next oil change). I was thinking of picking up a K&N at a friend's recommendation. He said it gives an extra little kick with very little extra cost. Any opinions on these things? BTW I drive a 2001 prelude before anyone asks.

Not that much extra kick, but if you maintain it right, you'll never have to buy another filter again for that car.

Yeah I have it. It does cost more but I'm not sure if it gave me any additional HP.

Added a little extra power, but not much. Easy to install and nice to know that it has a lifetime guarantee on it as long as it is properly maintained.

I heard that K&N filters are more likely to goop up your Mass air sensor if you over oil it cuz its wet style...thats bad... Get the Apexi instead.

I've had it for about 18 months and never had any problems with.

You talkin' OE sized filtercharger or the cone style? I have the OE type in mine and tho I noticed zero difference in my mind the wet style will be better able to capture dirt.

You'll only notice a horsepower difference if the air filter was the restriction in the system. On most cars, typically there's no seat-of-the-pants difference, even if you move to the cone-type filter. However, there's certainly no harm in running one.

I used it on my 01 Astro for 3 months. Saw no improvement, actually it made the transmission a bit rough. I changed it 3K miles later to a Delco filter. No more hiccups. I dunno why its did not work out so well for me :( I did see some torque improvement, but my city miles dragged down to 13 MPG, now with the Delco filter its at 15.3 MPG city mileage. :D

Best of luck.. hope Honda's like the K&N... cuz GM's sure don't.

I've used them in every car I've owned. They a necessary part of any serious car owners after market parts. They dont give you any extra horse power but they do allow almost 20-25% more air into your engine.

Good Stuff for the car.

i have one on my explorer and wanted one for the jaguar, but couldn't find one. I inspect it once a year to make sure it's clean, then i pop it back in. I've had it since a little after the car was purchased, so about 5 years.

I know that nissan maximas don't like the K&N wet filters. Somehow there are hella 5th gen max's with sensitive ass MAFs that get all gooped up and need to be replaced all the time. I'll stick with an Apexi...

Miata = Racing Beat intake + K&N cone
Suzuki TL 1000 = K&N stock replacement (BMC acutally, but same premise)(

Both are sturdy and re-useable. There is some debate in the actual airflow improvement in stock replacements, some suggesting it even allows less air through. I think it depends on your application. Do NOT over oil it.

BMC is NOT the same as K&N, although both are air filters (manufactured by different companies, obviously), but k&n is actually usually NOT recommended for bikes, as it's been proven to reduce the airflow, as opposed to increasing it. If you have to go aftermarket for air filerts, i'd suggest BMC, but stock on my gixxer is fine :)

Heh.. Thanks bmacd.. It's a BMC "race" .vs the "street" model. I know the difference but didn't wanna get tooooo technical. K&N filters have worked very well in motorcycle applications, I just wouldn't call them "stock replacements".

Toomey made a dual intake boot for RZ-350s that used a single Cylinder K&N filter to great effect, and K&N pod filters (one attached to each carb individually) have also been proven to have great effects.. This is all with appropriate re-jetting of course.;)

i have k&n fipk and you can notice the improvment- the car is mroe responsive and the blow off vavle sound is way louder (my car is turboed).
I think the dyno on a turbo eclipse is about 9 hp increase.

in order to have a 9 hp increase, you've got other mods too... what else've you got on that turbo dsm?

Never had that problem.

Ford has a service bulletin that mentions this exact problem. Nobody in the world can tell any difference at all in power by installing an air filter, unless the one they're replacing is totally stopped up.
The best thing about K&N's is that they last a lifetime.

Is it absolutely necessary to oil a cone filter? I have a K&N style that I got from pep boys :D

Cramming more air into the engine won't yield more HP unless your engine is running rich from the factory.

got a K&N on the end of my cold air intake, but i only really opted for that because it'll last alot longer than a traditional filter.
