If you are was just wondering if you could share some of your day to day life on or off base and such. I'm considering one of these, already spoke with and done a few things with the Air Force recruiter, going to see the Coast Guard recruiter within the next two days and would like to get some info from the people who are living that life.

Thanks!

I have been for the past two months or so. I've actually been looking at the service for awhile now. Huge decision here so I am asking questions to everyone I know that is or have been in the military.

Yeah, leaning towards the CG actually and I haven't even met with the recruiter.

I know a veteran (retired) Coast Guardee. He got up pretty high in the ranks, not exactly sure what rank though.

A friend recently retired as a Chief Petty Officer after 20 yrs at ripe old age of 39 from the USCG.

The USCG paid for his assoc degree, helped him buy a house, let him travel, provide him with experience that he is using in his new civilian career. He is now collecting a life time pension from the USCG.

Bottomline: The USCG has been very good to him.

The coasties are not always a civilian branch.
Percentage wise, they put their lifes in peril more often during peacetime that any of the "military" branches.

Training may be slightly more in the militry branches, however, coasties get to interact with military personel also.

Less deployments; promotion potential is about the same. Many stations are located within the US and territories; both deep and shallow water assignments plus air rescue.

And this is coming from an ex-AF officer who has a son as a Coastie E-6

Thanks for the input EagleKeeper, like I mentioned before, trying to get as much input as I possibily can before deciding. Both branches have certain things that appeal to me but one of the career opportunities with the CG is along the lines of what I wanted to do since I was 8.

Your are welcome.

You may wish to actually try to visit a CG station and talk to the PAO there to get some more feedback. They will usually bend over to help you with some advance notice.

Recruiters are one thing, actually people who are putting their lifes on the line currently are another. Recruiters have been there also, however, they currently have another job, to bring you on board.

The recruiter may be able to arrange a visit for you though.

I was ready to get into the Air Force until a mild case of psoriasis kept me out. With all the research I've done on the military and its benefits, one job always caught my eye--boom operator. Remember the game Top Gun for Nintendo? You're the guy who controls to boomstick on the KC-130 tanker planes. You stick your boomstick in jets and other aircraft to refuel midflight.

You get to wear a flight suit and it is either the only job or one of two jobs that gets an enlisted person on flight crew. They are also heavily deployed from what I understand, so if the whole see-the-world concept is what is intruiging you that could be a good option.
