In May we are taking the kids to Disney for a week, and we are gonna have an extra two days to see other attractions and sites. Anything worth checking out within distance? No clubs or bars. And how far is the beach?

well disney world is in the middle of FL, so if you want a salt water beach, either direction (east or west) about 1 1/2 hours will get you there. There are a few freshwater beaches in the area too, I think Disney even has one on its property but not sure. Also I believe there is a single A baseball club in the area, you can go watch "the stars of tomorrow" play today :)

EDIT: also I believe there is still a sea world in orlando.

I would have to say, on the west coast it would be Sanibel Island, on the east coast Daytona. Both are about 1 1/2 to 2 hours from Orlando

Make sure you save a night to check out Downtown Disney - it's a really cool place to just walkaround. Do it at night though, I can't imagine how lame it is during the day :)

Universal can be done in about a day (including both parks) so you might wanna give it a try. I'm telling you now though, you'll be thoroughly disappointed trying to compare Universal w/ Disneyworld though haha.

well that all depends...there is a ton of stuff to do there as a tourist. how old are the kids? interests?
the beaches are not 1&1/2 hours from disney. from disney you take i-4 directly to 528 and head east, maybe an hour, probably less and that will take you to canaveral & cocoa beach. Cocoa is ok - no cars on the beach, so if you have smaller kids, its better than New Smyrna which is a lil north of Cocoa. Canaveral is also there, which is pretty cool if you have boys or kids interested in space, pretty cool place to explore for a day.
Islands of adventure is a great park, the rides are awesome, but they don't have the shows like Disney. If the kids are younger, say 8 or less, it might not be the best place as the rides are usually designed for more of an older crowd there. On the pro for IoA though, you can drink in the park - can definitely make a day with kids alot easier to take:)
There are tons of things on International drive, from great go-cart places to mini-golf to Ripley's to shopping, to great restaurants and more. Definitely drive the length of I-drive one evening, its an experience if nothing more.

If you want to goto a beach during snowbird season, the beaches ARE 1 1/2 hours away at the least, middle of summer is about 1 hour

If you are looking for sand and water, why not just go to Blizzard Beach as WDW? Plenty for the kids to do, it's fresh water, and you don't have the several hours of driving (and the cost of the gas to do it). With many Disney passes, Blizzard Beach and the other water park (name escapes me for the moment) are included.

If you go to Seaworld, keep in mind that Whales can't actually speak, and do not try to send one to the moon. :)

If you don't know, you should be prepared for 95 degree temps. Orlando gets about ~10 degrees hotter than the coast.

The NASA tour, of course. I just took it for the first time a few days ago and it is great.

Before moving back to the Northeast, I lived in Tampa for ~20 months. I lived 2.5 miles from Busch Gardens.

Universal/IoA are fun parks. Sea World also is nice, For lesser costing attractions, there are many things to do/places to see on I-Drive. Many outlet malls in the area. Check for the outlets at the end of I-drive towards Orlando--they have 2 Disney outlets and 1 Universal Outlet. Not sure Univeral store name, but Disney stores are Character Warehouse & Character Premiere. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND these stores as you can get theme park merchandise at substantial savings. Great for souveniers.

Water Parks:
Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach for Disney
Wet N Wild on I-drive.

Old Town on 192, as well as many other things to do. Others have mentioned the dinner shows, etc all over the place. Best bet??? Get a bunch of tourist brochures as soon as you arrive and look through them.

Spend at least one night at Downtown Disney there is always something to do there. Maybe try eating at the rainforest cafe there. You also might want to got to Disney quest for a day. It is a huge 5 story arcade with many classic arcade, virtual realtiy, and interactive games. If you want to go to a beach that is relaxing and not packed with tourists you go to Ft. Desoto. It is a little ways from Orlando,(it is on the southern tip of Pinellas county) but would be worth a 2 hour drive. If you want to avoid the drive to the beach got to Typhoon Lagoon, or blizzard beach right in orlando. I would personally avoid animal kingdom as there are a lack of rides and interesting attractions IMHO.
