Cost of living -

Apartments: So So. For a nice 2 BR apartment in a decent neighborhood, look at paying around $700 or so.

Gas: Cheap. $1.29 a gallon or so for 90 octane right now

Car insurance: Dirt cheap!

Houses(if you are looking to buy): You can do pretty good for $120k

---------------------------

Things to do: 2 malls, a couple bowling alleys, some organized lan party action every month, lots of parks and rec areas. Lots of decent bars 1/2 hour down the road in Coralville and Iowa City area.

Other than that, not a huge night life, and fairly conservative. Head to Iowa City for some more night life

--------------------------

Future Education: University of Iowa is 1/2 an hour down the road. Doesn't get that much more open than that.

If you want a guided tour or a place to crash for a night or two to come over and look for housing PM me and I can help you out.

My friend just went there a few days ago. She has family there and is gonna be living near University of Iowa for her PhD.

She said its pretty boring in Cedar Rapids, not much to do for someone in their early 20s.

IT SMELLS LIKE A$$.

No, not A$$. More like A$$ GONE BAD.

Don't move to Iowa, you'll hate it. If you HAVE to move, get a place in Iowa City close to the University. Its the only decent place in this whole piece o crap state.

I just want to stress again that this is Iowa you are talking about. Mix Texas, Utah, and a little bit of Minnesota and Wisconsin together, and you have Iowa. Bad ingredients, worse product. I'm out of here as soon as possible.

When you visit Cedar Rapids, the first thing you notice are the 5 smells of Cedar Rapids. And they're not good smells by any means. I forget all of them, but I'm sure vi_edit knows them. But when I say it stinks, I can speak from experience. I grew up in Sioux City, IA where we had the sewer treatment plant, the stockyards(they're big), IBP, John Morrell, and Nutro Flo. All of those smells were God Damn AWFUL. However, these smells just don't have the radius like the ones in Cedar Rapids. Although its worst when driving through, you can still smell the stink in at least 75% of the city. Not good. Plus, like I said before, its Iowa. Go to a suburb, like vi did, or even better, Iowa City.

P.S. I'm from Cedar Falls/Waterloo. You don't want to live here either. It doesn't smell, but it has even less action than Cedar Rapids. ;)

Carnagge is the local lan party community. I haven't joined any of the events, so I can't comment on their quality.

As for the smells of the city, well, I won't deny them :) We've got a Quaker Oats, General Mills, ADM, Ralston and one other company that put out a very "interesting" collage of odors. The best days are when General Mills are putting out their fruity flavored cereals. It's almost pleasant :)

For those of us in our 20's, yup, CR is pretty boring. I personally live closer to Iowa City than I do to Cedar Rapids. I live in a bedroom community called North Liberty. It's a halfway point between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, it's for families like mine that have one member that works in CR, and one that works in IC. Pretty nice, especially since it's considerably cheaper than Iowa City.

Better "scenery" down in Iowa City also. Mucho chicas muy bonitas
