Anyone here work for Abbott Labs?

GoingUp

Lifer
I just was offered an internship with them... wondering what you think...

Edit: I'd be working in their IT department, not as a chemist or anything like that.

I think that Abbot used to have a poor reputation as an employer but that's changed in recent years.

Their analyzers kick ass. 🙂

My father works for them, he says it's a wonderful place.. I know people in my college who applied there.. You mean Abbott Labs in North Chicago, right?

They have many divisions and have tons of acronyms.. One of their hospital units just split off, and they were under an harsh light recently for Medicare issue that the other big drug companies have.

Thats the one... I'd be in their corporate headquarters.... theyd be paying for me to spend the summer in the marriot hotel too 😉 A summer of free room and swimming everyday after work sounds damn good to me!

😀

I don't work there, but I know a lot of people who do, its a good place to work, from what I've heard.

A Marriot hotel? Like where? I didn't think there was one near Abbot....

I disagree with the quality of their clinical analyzers. I saw them at the AACC (American Association of Clinical Chemistry) this year and really wasn't that impressed with their clinical analyzer offerings. More importantly, they were seriously trying to do damage control PR since they were under fire from the FDA over some of their tests. Their reputation was marred when they thumbed their nose at the FDA and got pinged on it. I think that affected the opinions of some of those in the CLS field.

EDIT: Congrats on the internship though. I'm not trying to crap on your opportunity (even though it sounds like I am....I'm not trying to) b.c. it sounds like a great opportunity. 😀

Being that it is an internship, I would go for it if I were you.

However, if you want to get into some sort of analytical field after college I would stay far away from Abbot. Sure, I bet there are a few happy people here and there however from everybody I have talked to that have had some sort of relationship with Abbot, none gave them good marks.

Also, if you are curious about any analytical clinical and/or forensic toxicology (drug testing) I suggest staying away from it. It is a mess of an industry and it is more akin to a industrial production line than anything you may think of while in school.

I havent worked for them, however working for a pharmaceutical corp. will give you an education, not just in IT, but in how businesses work at a real world level. Go for it.

That name sounds familiar! Did you mean to say Abbott Lab? I thought they were broke since they have legal litigations to fight. It is the same company that manufactures Prevacid, right? My sibling is representing plaintiffs suing Abbott Lab for failure to warn of Prevacid depriving one of an essential vitamin, which resulted in worsened illness.

Maybe you shouldn't take the job if you can't even spell the Company's name correctly! Hehehe!

On a serious note: Congratulations! If you ever copnsidered pharmacy or medicine, then this is a good chance to work in that field as an IT. Is this the company that called you after rejecting you? If so, I do have to agree with others: It seems rather suspicious that you were called after being rejected. Chances are, they aren't a very appealing company, so other people rejected their offer or quit. Well, it's just an internship, anyway. You aren't going to be held hostage for more than the vacation/off school period. Whatever works for you! Best of luck!

Spelling never was my strong suit. Im still waiting to hear back from other companies, but I think I will end up taking this internship. It pays much better than my current job and living in a free air conditioned hotel with a pool for the summer is better than living in a sweltering college house. Yes this is the company that sent me the rejection letter a couple of weeks ago... I was kind of confused by the whole deal, but its better to have gotten an internship out of the way ahead of time....

From their website they look like a good place to work. Their recruiters and IT people that I met were very nice.
