Anyone here with a ReplayTV 5504? (EDIT: Replay 5500's vs Tivo Series 2, which is better?)

So anyone here own a 5504? They're so cheap now I'm really tempted to buy it and then upgrade the hard drive.

So what's the biggest drive(s) the 5504 will accept?

Does the 5504 have the ethernet ports built in?

Has anyone ever used their 5504 with a PC (transfer if data)?

I've heard someone else say that the 5040's are better than 5500s. Is it because of the commercial advance?

Is it still possible to buy those?

Just thought of another question. I've heard rumours that ReplayTV might close down shop, what happens if you have a lifetime subscription to the guide data? Currently my two ancient showstoppers don't require a fee to get guide data, I wsh the newer models were the same.

I'm pretty sure I have the model you are talking about. I got it last year before Xmas for $149 with lifetime activation.

I have it hooked up on my network. Transfering shows to your computer takes nearly as long as it does to watch the show in real time. Not really a big deal, just letting you know it's not quick. The format is some slightly funky mp2, I think. I can watch it fine through media players, but friends with units have had trouble. I guess it's just a codec issue. Converting and burning as a DVD isn't all that difficult after you figure it out the first time. I've never done it, but 2 of my friends have burned several DVDs from stuff they have on their Replay.

I don't have a series 2 TiVo (I have series 1 w/o subscription), but from what I've read it seems better subscription wise. I think their season pass is better than the Replay recording methods. Again, I don't have one, so I'm just guessing from what I've read. While the Replay can be set to record "Reno 911" at any time, or at a specific time (say each Wed at 10:00), I seem to end up with dupe episodes. I think TiVo has "record new Reno 911" and it will grab new episodes no matter when they are on.

Not sure what the Series 2 networking abilities are. I think they include a bit more of the networking features now in their regular subscription.

ALSO, the folks that own Replay TV are in no danger of shutting down. I assume they would support Replay for a number of years at least.

I'm not sure there is a limit? I just put an 80 in mine, which was more than big enough to suit my needs.

Yes

Yes, you can download any show onto your PC, convert it to DVD or whatever you want to do with it. I found it even cooler that my modded Xbox can stream shows off of the ReplayTV.

And yes, the 5504 doesn't have the auto commercial skip like the 5040 did, but all you have to do is hit the right arrow key and it skips them anyways (usually, doesn't work right 100% of the time), so if you can deal witih hitting a button once in awhile, you're allright. And of course it has the 30 second skip too to jump through the commercials one by one.

What's the deal with these modded XBoxs?

I have my modded XBOX in my game room. I have the Replay TV in my living room. I can watch anything I want off the Replay across my network in my game room.

Yes it does, kind friend.

If you have other Replay questions, post away. Me and few buddies have had the 5504 for close to a year now. Switching out the drives on a Replay is very easy as well. I'd suggest doing it first thing if you get one, otherwise it might take a while. If you do it first, you don't have to copy over all the shows you've taped.

I do have a question about WIRNS. Have you ever used it before? Is it reliable?

Never used it. I thought you were in Chicago? Looks like that WIRNS is a program guide for folks outside the US. I had never heard of it until you said it.

dvArchive is the program I've been using. It turns your computer into a vitual Replay machine where you can store and stream shows off. So, if you fill up your 40gig drive, transfer those to your computer. You can still stream the shows off your computer and watch them on your Replay at any time.

Replay > Tivo. While the 5504 doesnt have auto commercial advance, all you have to do is hit the right arrow and it will skip over the commercials. As others have said it has tons of capability, and upgrading the drive is cake, mine has a 160GB.

How many hours does that give you?

Why is transferring the shows over the network so slow? doesn't seem right to me assuming you're using actual wired 100MBit and not wireless. I'm interested because I'm trying to decide between the two myself, and replaytv sounds like it has alot more features with alot less hassle, despite some of the drawbacks in interface/service. Slow network transfer would be a pain though.

Transferring isn't that slow - you can set up a batch job on the PC to pull them over in the middle of the night anyway. If you do this there is no need to upgrade the drive in the replay at all. Just add drives to the PC and then when you want to watch something just stream it from the PC to the replay.
I like the 5508 I picked up when there was the lifetime subscription fiasco I picked up a 5040 refurb later.
