Anyone here use Vonage with DSL?

Vonage, theoretically would be perfect for my GF and her sister, since they both have cell phones, but also have a home line to call their parents long distance during peak hours. At quick glance, Vonage appears to cst them like $25 less/month than their current phone setup.

However, since they have DSL, they's still have to pay approx. $10 to keep a phone line to run DSL. Then they lose the $5 savings they get from having DSL and phone from Verizon. It still seems to be a $10 savings monthly, but of course these are rough estimates, so that $10 could easily be less than that. This coupled with the fact that Vonage relies on power to run, makes me wonder if it's worth it.

'course, another option is they switch to cable, hopefully getting a break since they already have cable TV, then just dropping Verizon DSL and phone service. But cable is more expensive than DSL...

Figured I"d get some opinions on this. (This is in NYC, btw)

I was forced into this situation. DSL isn't offered at my new house. So I had to switch to cable modem. Since that was the case, I dropped phone service and I am going to get Vonage. If you are worried about power in an emergency, just get a UPS.

Well, getting a UPS cuts into any cost savings acquired by switching to Vonage. If it was a clear-cut savings of $25/month by switching to Vonage, then it's a no-brainer. However, it seems that there's a bunch of issues that are minimizing the savings, especially since I don't know if they will be staying in their current apartment beyond April 2005.
