anyone here use extended wear contacts?

the lenses i have are supposed to be used for 3 months, yet i've probably had this pair on for at least 8 months, with no real sign of wear. the first contacts i ever purchased (maybe 8 years ago) would feel sh!tty after about 3-4 months of use, now they still feel new 8 months later. i haven't changed the type of lenses in 3 years - the only thing i can think i've changed (in the past few years) is the fact that i stopped doing weekly protein removal and instead started buying the more expensive solution that has daily protein treatments. i've also stopped washing my lenses daily because my solution takes care of this also. i'm thinking that the daily cleaning and the weekly protein treatments caused more wear and tear than the new solution-based treatments. if so, i'd recommend other extended wear users to spend the extra $2 on the more expensive solution - it'll cut your contacts purchases by ~70%. i've used my current pair ~65% longer than i should have, and they're still going strong.

I wear my 2 week disposables for months at a time. I usually take them out and put them in solution at least once a month.

Contact Lenses: Settlement of Bausch & Lomb Lens Wearer Class Action

Competition from Johnson & Johnson led Bausch & Lomb to relabel its lenses to compete with Accuview disposable lenses which have long held a premier share of the contact lens market. At the time, Bausch & Lomb was selling a long wear lens under the name of Optima, which wholesaled to optometrists for approximately $25. In order to enter the disposable market Bausch & Lomb simply repackaged its Optima lens and renamed it the Medalist for intermediate wear and as the Sequence for disposable use.

Does anyone know if that situation has changed at all? Sure, there are dire warnings against using disposables over the long term but I have a cousin who's done just that for years now without a problem.

AFAIK, as long as you don't leave them in for long periods of time (ie, don't sleep in them) and clean them regularly, you should be fine. If you leave them in for too long, you will get vesicle growth on your cornea.

For some reason, I can only handle wearing Focus dailies. All the others, including Focus night/day cause my eyes to dry out.

i wear the focus night and days. i take them out every night though unless i go somewhere for the weekend, in which case i leave them in the whole time.

I was previously using Focus Toric lenses (my eyes are astigmatic), but when I asked the doctor about something more comfortable, he put me on CooperVision Preference Torics, which are actually LESS comfortable than the Focus lenses. Luckily, I only bought a year's supply. I'll be going back to Focus lenses when this year is up (in April).

I use focus dailys since I don't wear contacts all the time maybe 3-4 times a week and than only a few hours a day. and they're VERY convenient(s/p) I just put a pack in my car and always have some. I have worn them for a week with out them falling apart. I had some monthly ones that I wore probably for a yyear with no problems, I just kept 'em clean. I had some of the ones you were supposed to be able to wear for a week w/o taking thme out, but they ended up causeing problems after a few months. but they were prety comfortable for those few months. maybe in a year or so when more technology has surfaced I'll try the ones you can wear for multiple days again.
