Just wondering if there's anything I should know before signing up. Is there a better option? Any significant disadvantage compared to the competition?
 
The only good use carbonite is for is to get pain in the ass smugglers and nerf herders out of the way...
 
Depending on the amount of data you have to back up, their upload throttling may be a deal breaker for you.

Actual speeds may vary depending on your Internet connection, your computer's configuration, other Internet-enabled software you may be running, and how often you use your computer. The current maximum upload speeds are as follows:

- The first 35GB of data can achieve upload speeds of up to 2 mbps
(megabits per second).
- Between 35GB - 200GB of data can have the upload speeds reach up to 512 kbps

- 200GB or more of data can be uploaded at up to 100 kbps (kilobits per second).

I have about 175GB of data to back up and it is taking forever. I won't be renewing my subscription. I think you would be better off buying two external HDs for back up use. Keep the same stuff on both with one being kept off site and updated weekly/monthly depending on your needs.

The only thing that I like about it is how it modifies the icons with a small color code to show if it had been backed up or not. Other than that... not really worth it.

Yep, wireless users are pretty much screwed. Luckily pen drives, external HDs and DVDs are pretty cheap.

I love sugarsync for the free stuff ... otherwise backblaze is probably the best IMO...if you need more then 100GB of storage+
 
I just use the free Skydrive and Mesh for my important stuff. The rest of my media and pron files can be replaced if the drive dies.
 
No I use my own online cloud service. 1.2 TB backed up and counting so far. It is not that much I know people with well over 8 TB of data. I am picky.

This, I use amazon's paid cloud service. It comes to about $1/GB per year which is worth it. The only downside vs Carbonite is that you have to keep track of the backup, it won't do a diff on your files for you. But for the money it's the best value vs other paid services IMO.
