Because with freeweights, you obviously need balance or else you will smash your head with a bar. So in order to balance, all the little tiny muscles around the major parts kick in. So free weights is really the best way to go, but as you said you need dedication.
Actually most independant magazine reviews of the bowflex praise it as working your stabilizer muscles. Many people cheat on free weights by doing the old "jerk and lift" routine which avoids working the stabilizer muscles the way they should be worked.
