Anyone here travel the world for months, years?

OS

Lifer
I have this strange impulse to quit work and then go travel. Teach english and live in Taiwan, Japan for a couple months each. Visit some lesser asian countries for a couple weeks or so along the way, leveraging cost of living. If there's money left over, crash europe. Seems like the sort of thing I should do while I'm young.

The main thing is I'm pretty happily employed and comfortably paid. If I do that, I sacrifce, pay and my career.

I didnt think of me working outside from sweden. BUt 7 months ago I moved to ireland with my fiancee and started working for xerox. It was extremely rough the first few months, geteting settled down and getting used to a new environment. But now I feel its ALL worth it. I still want to move back to sweden sometime, maybe only gonna stay here for a year or so. But I know I will look back and not regret a single thing about this trip.

My fiancee and I will probably go back to sweden, save up some money and do Asia for about 4 months. Thats something we really want to do. Its funny how she have changed my aspect of travelling.. Girls can have such a huge impact on you sometimes. 🙂

Appropriate Pulp Fiction quote to follow...

Jules: Basically I'm just gonna walk the earth.
Vincent: Whatcha mean 'walk the earth'?
Jules: You know, like Caine in Kung Fu - walk from place to place, meet people, get in adventures.
Vincent: So you're gonna be a bum?

😀

You don't neccessarily have to sacrifice your career. One of the ladies at my client went on a year sabbatical. She toured all over the place. Came back a year later with her same job and pay. I guess it depends on where you work.

Do it. I did. With the right attitude, you will never regret it. I took off and travelled the world, working when I needed to, for nearly 5 straight years. Do it while you're young, unencumbered and healthy.

Travel light, take chances, put as little between you and the people on the street in any culture you visit. Don't be a tourist, be a traveller. Hitch hike when you can. Go into a city you've never been to before, and start asking the most likely people where a good place to hang is. Go there, make friends, and you will end up with a place to sleep. Get past any media induced fears you have and learn first hand just how incredibly generous folks everywhere can be to the wayfaring stranger.

You'll learn a lot about America from the outside. You'll learn a lot about the English language learning other ones immersively as you go. You'll learn a lot about yourself and how very little you need to make your way in the world. You'll get laid a lot, too -- with the right, open attitude.

Cliff Notes for the terminally retarded: Do it.

Do it while you can.

I have done 3 stints of 6 months each, and the experience was great. My younger sister (she had a Master in Education) is going on 31 year old and is teaching English in mainland China at the moment, and she had taught in Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Egypt, and France. (She had traveled to many other countries that is too much to list). She had been gone the last 6-7 years and only had been back for 3 x-mass. (She enjoyed the travel way too much to come home, therefore she take her x-mass vacation to travel to more places)

I go about a month at a time, but any longer and things get difficult. I'm young, and I can appreciate the whimsical nature of getting away for months at a time, but I can't give up my career, etc. at home; after all, it is that career which allows one to actually take those trips in the future.

if all goes according to plan, this time next year i'll quit my job and go traveling. it really does seem like a cool thing to do in your lifetime, and its probably better to do it while i'm still young.

do it. i am not joking.
do it while you can still enjoy your youth and your health.
Agreed. Nothing worse than being "an old guy" and saying "DAMN, I should've done _ _ _ when I had the opportunity"! Go talk with your boss or HR and see if you can't get a leave of absence. Some companies encourage this sort of thing as it makes for a more centered, grounded employee upon your return. If they do, WIN, If not, you still win, because you're gonna TRAVEL and SEE THE REST of the world, while they are stuck in their cubicles.
DO IT!
