I used it as one of the many drugs in my arsenal for narcolepsy. It was 10mg of the extended release stuff, and it definitely remains one of the more potent drugs I have ever used. Like all stimulants, I would quickly become resistant to the effects and would have to rotate off for a week or continue to up the dosage. If used at a high enough dose, it induced a mild mania, where I felt like I could accomplish anything; however, I have noticed (and it is a known phenomenon) that despite the fact that everything I did while on adderall (or any very strong stimulant for that matter) seemed to be perfect, it actually caused me to make far more mistakes than I normally would, and I would not realize it at the time. In a way, it gives the user tunnel-like focus, where minute details become more important than the big picture. This is why people report that adderall and other amphetamines make them want to clean the floor with a toothbrush, or something to that effect.
Adderall, and to a lesser extent, Ritalin, were two drugs that I did not and still do not particularly like to use for more than 1-2 days continuously, as the crash was far more severe and noticeable than with milder alternatives. Back in my college days, it was a necessary evil.
In college. there was a fair amount of recreational use of prescription stimulants, and I know of at least a handful of people who took the drug to help concentrate on tests. I am also sure that many who did not, either did not have easy access or were unwilling to ask around- many a straight-edge student came to me for various "study aids" given that I was always well stocked due to my condition. The going rate for a cap of Adderall was between $5-10 as of 2004, as far as I can remember. Insurance paid for my stock, which I believe was about $3/10mg capsule.
And yes, the stuff killed my appetite like none other. Not only did I not feel hungry, the thought and act of eating was nauseating. Never had much trouble falling asleep no matter what I was on, although that probably does not apply to the average non-narcoleptic user.
