anyone here sell their verizon unlimited? update: trying to port number away now.

so i had t-mobile for 4 years in LA. it was great. then i moved to the bay area where t-mobile isnt as good , not to mention smartphones came out and it was just barely useable and switched to verizon while i was at a company that offered a huge discount (so i've been on verizon for 3ish years now)

anyway i move back to LA to work for a new company and verizon finally pulled my discount.

so i've got unlimited and i'm still under contract for 6 months. i kind of want to switch back to t-mobile since its probably $40 a month less (and t-mobile coverage is good here, my apartment building IS a t-mobile tower) , since i'd probably do the 2.5GB plan. ($100 vs $60)

so i dont want to pay the ETF and i don't want to wait 6 months since i want a moto x (don't want to buy it on verizon then have to buy it again later). anyway has anyone here sold their unlimited data plan to get out of ETF? i've heard this was possible but just wanted to know how much of a hassle it is and if its easy to be able to keep your number.

I see the unlimited plans for sale on ebay, they assume financial responsibility and you're good to go.

lame so apparently you can't port a number out of verizon that is on a contract. i even tried on google voice and it said it couldn't and read a bit that you cant do it.

after doing a bit more research it seems that if you do port it out when not on contract, basicall you have to log in to verizonwireless 15min or so after you port out to say google voice, and then tell verizon that you want to change your number (while the port is in progress, but both carriers think they have the number). then you can port out and keep the old line.

so i guess the lesson is if you do decide to try to do something liek this to port to google voice first, on your off contract verizon account and then you can probably keep unlimited on your verizon account and switch numbers.

I was wondering the same thing too as I'm looking to sell off my unlimited line when my contract ends. Im starting to think I might have to accept a new number

and apparnetly it might be possible.

i guess you have to request a port out, then right after the port is in progress login to your verizon account and request a new phone number. kind of risky, i guess i might give it a shot once my contract is actually up and there is no ETF risk

Yeah... I wouldn't if I cared about that number.

The safest way to keep your number is to activate a month-to-month line on your account using any old working Verizon dumbphone, swap numbers between the two lines, then port out your old number.

That leaves your unlimited line with the new number, ready to transfer to someone else.

Also the data discount doesn't apply to the 2gb tier on single line. Only on 5gb+ or unlimited if you are grandfathered.

Which is why its dumb. If I got an upgrade subsidy with a 2gb plan the subsidy would be mostly negated by losing data discount on the $30 tier

I don't understand the 40-100% off MSRP logic. If you sign a contract, of course the phone is significantly subsidized. Hence "40-100% off".

when i applied the discount , it worked out like this.


i've got $40 a month 450 min, $20 unlimited text and $30 for data. so tahts $90

the discount totaled $15. 15% off the $60 voice + data part so $9 there. and 20% off the $30 data part so $6 there. so $15.

my previous discount was a little over $20. so now my bill is $75. t-mobile 2.5GB lte is $60 and unlimited is $70 (i dont really care about the anytime minutes, though i guess its useful to note i'd have unlimited min voice on t-mobile). my previous discount was 25% off data ( i used to work for ibm). i think for the most part you need to apply the discount to see what that data is. there is a field that says what your discount works out to on the change my plan page and you can figure it out from there using pretty simple math.

i think for me verizon vs t-mobile and the cost is more of an issue of principal. its not going to kill me to pay $30 more for say verizon. but it seems overpriced for that, but $15 more i'd probably take verizon every single time.

hmm so last night on a whim i checked if google voice would allow me to port my number again. last time it said i couldn't but oddly this time it said it was allowed.

so i did it.

had the confidence because of that thread. basically port number away, then change number on verizon while it is porting.

so far it seems to be working, and i guess ill know for sure in 10 hours or so. my verizon account hasnt been canceled and the new number is working fine (and i already took my texting plan off which saves $20 a month).

next step is likely going to be selling the plan on ebay for 200-300, then switching to t-mobile (turns out i also get 15% off there, so its actaully only about $50 a month for the unlimited everything) so i can get a nexus 5 or moto X or something once i figured out what i want to do assumign the number port works.

verizon number is on google voice now, and my verizon account now has a new number, line not canceled, no ETF.

I've got the Verizon State of Oklahoma discount because of the college I was at. Apparently they allowed all students to receive discounts so I get something like 18% off my monthly bill and 25% off all accessories in store or online. No discounts on phones but I'm thinking of switching off them pretty soon because the plan is still $80/month.

I have unlimited data so I'd be looking to sell that line most likely. BTW if interested PM me.

Their service has been pretty good but I'm thinking about going back to AT&T or T-Mobile. Maybe a prepay service. I just need the service to work so I may trial a couple before making the switch.

Were you successful in selling your line? I might put mine up soon. The people on my family plan filed BK and I have to xfer my line off. They wanted $125 for my single line, keep unlimited data and 700 minutes. Fuck that.

I opened a T-Mobile line to test out their service in my area (LA/OC) and its pretty awesome. Dead spot here and there but nothing I didn't experience on Verizon either. Also wanted to test how true their unlimited data is. Its been 3 days and pushing 8 gigs. I bypassed the tether block as well. Looking good so far but still got 20 more days to go.

Also picked up an S4 with T-Mobile. Really blows my Gnex to shame. Tethering and charging doesnt turn my phone into a brick of fire. Its been a few hours and the phone is still very cool. Battery even lasts 2-3x longer than the Gnex even while tethering vs Gnex being idle. Its crazy.

well finally actually pulled this off.

put line on ebay for $250. within 20 min of listing had a "best offer" from 2 guys with 150 and 200 feedback. took one with $210 offer.

called verizon, gave the guys name, his vzw account number, and that guys phone number.

told guy my phone number so he could tell vzw which line to move over. he calls verizon. done deal.

really easy to do it turns out.

Fucking longest hold time ever for verizon aol department. Literally sat there with the guy for almost an hour on hold. Aol went easily and guy didn't even try to low ball me.

Running tmobile lte right now which has way better reception in my room and has speeds faster than verizon because it's network isn't as congested. No contract !
