Its bad in the Summer, its really bad in the winter (when the sun is closer to the earth.) I cant hardly even poke my head outside without sunglasses on, and I cant even find dark enough ones to be comfortable. If I dont wear them, my eyes start watering, and I have to squint so much, I cant hardly see where I am going. If I get into the shade its much better.

Is this a common problem? Its getting to the point I am gonna have to get some of those old people sunglasses, that are really dark and wrap around my head. Think I should see a doctor?

I dont know if my sensitivity is more than yours but on sunny summer days or sunny winter days when there is snow on the ground, my eyes start tearing up that i have to run to my car which is usually 100 feet away. it usually takes a minute or two to get used to the light but in that minute, I get teary, dizzy, and become trippy. who needs hallucinogens when mother nature does the job? :p

good thing I have tints in my car.

Yep! If I'm outside with a bunch of other people, I'm either the only one who is squinting, or I'm squinting the most by far, from the sun. I told my ophthamologist this, because I am REALLY sensitive, and he said since I'm not taking any medications which can make me photosensitive, I should just wear sunglasses where ever I can. I was like, THANKS! Sh-t, I could have figured that out myself.

I always figured it was a by-product of excellent vision. Every time I have had my eyes checked it has been 20/15 or 20/20.

Well its not after I have been inside a building all day or anything, I drive my truck most of the day, and that feeling you described, LASTS ALL DAY. :(

I'm not so bad as you appear to be, but sunlight does tend to bother my eyes a lot. Some people are more sensitive than others. However, if it is getting worse, or it used to not bother you, it might be a good idea to see an opthamologist (sp?).

I get it mainly in the morning. One day, on my way to school, it was so incredibly bad that i literally drove off the road. I dont seem to have it all the time though, just occationally..

well this will be a strange perspective, but i am colorblind... more aptly described as "color deficient"

in other words, the rods (color sensing parts) in my eyes don't work worth a sh!t... i get red and green mixed up real bad, along w/ a bunch of other colors ya prolly don't care about

anyway, i value what sight i DO have in my eyes, and bright sunlight PHYSICALLY hurts me... i mean, i really feel like shriveling up into a little ball when i forget my sunglasses.

anyway, my night vision is awesome... kinda like that "deaf blind" argument... like if you go blind, yer ears compensate by becoming excellent "hearing devices" that half ass make up for your lack of sight... well since my rods suck, my cones (black and white sensing parts) "make up" for it by giving me excellent "low" light vision...

heh, when driving at night, turning my brights on hinders my vision more than it helps

I wear sunglasses sun up to sun down when I'm outside. The worst for me can be going to the movies. If the movie has a thunderstorm, or cuts quickly from night to day it kills my eyes. I can't watch. Doc's say my eyes dialate<sp?> correctly and stuff. They don't know why my eyes are so sensitive.

To de-sensitize your eyes - from an Opthamologist.

NEVER look directly into the sun with your eyes (pupils) directly at the sun.

In comfortable position, CLOSE eyes and look directly at sun for 5 to 10 minutes until it's comfortable.
Next, while looking down - hold your upper lid up to expose sunlight to the "whites of your eyes."
Do this for 5 or 10 minutes - if uncomfortable - stop.
The idea is to NOT let sunlight directly into the pupils.
Increase exposure gradually - twice a day is better.

Of course, if there is pain - STOP.
Even if you have to look with eyes closed twice a day for 20 min.
Gradually work up to 20 min. with lids up twice a day.

If painful, see a doctor.

Zaq is right on.

Sunglasses, or any kinds of glasses for that matter, are like a crutch for your eyes. The more you use them the weaker your eyes get. The book is titled

Take Off Your Glasses and See

You do need eye protection between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, but do yourself a favor and exercise your eyes by leaving the glasses off at other times. Gradually your eyeballs will develop their own protection sota like exercising a muscle.

I wear sunglasses outside ALL the time. I would do the desensitizing AND wear sun glasses.

Direct sunlight can lead to cataracts.
I don't know how true it is, sheep in southern Chile, down at the bottom of SA, were going blind from
the Antarctic ozone hole that extended up that far. Better safe than sorry.

I have sensitive eyes too. Even on regular sunny days, I'll have to squint. I agree with the sunglasses being crutches, but then I think it's better for me to wear sunglasses when I drive. I also seem to have better nightvision then other people though. Maybe our pupils are a bit larger and so let in more light?

My fiancee calls me a vampire b/c I'm constantly turning lights off indoors or pulling the shades shut. My eyes have always been sensitive to light. I also spent a couple of years arc-welding as a profession which may have helped along with some "retina burn".

I have sensitive eyes. ( they are baby blue ) When I get any cold or flu, I have to have all the curtains drawn and sometimes have blankets put over the windows on top of that.

(I do not wear glasses and my vision is 20/20)

Adding to my first post... I rarely wore sunglasses until I got into a car accident in '94. Car rolled over, roof caved in, and I hit my head pretty hard. After that my eyes became very sensitive to bright light. As for glasses/sunglasses being a crutch? If glasses were used when not needed I think they can have an adverse effect, but I think normally used glasses help your eyes perform as they should.

I have light sensitive eyes, not nearly as bad as you though. I usually squint when I'm outside during a sunny day. I need to buy a pair of sunglasses (with corrective lenses).
