i was thinking about it but i was wondering how mcuh of a great system i would need to run it efficiently. i know you need a minimum of 256...anyone with any experience?

I ran it for about a month on my p3 650@1ghz with 256mb pc133 ram but I didn't end up using all of its extras so I turned back to Win2k Pro. Win2k AS ran great with what I described, it booted much faster than my Win2k Pro does now too.

I am running Advanced Server with Active Domain and Exchange 2000 at my place. I run it on a dual p2 333 with 512megs of ECC SDRAM. I don't have the fastest CPUs in the world, but it runs quite smoothly especially with the amount of RAM I have in the machine.

I run it dual booting with Win2k professional (MCSE training crap). Anyway, I run a PIII 900 with an 18GB Quantum Atlas 10k II and an IBM 30GB 75GXP. Advanced Server resides on the IBM and it runs without a hitch. I'm using it right now, as a matter of fact. I use 256MB of RAM and, with IIS disabled, I usually have RAM usage after boot-up of approximately 90MB. The real key to running it and being pleased is to have RAM and a fast hard drive. Used to run it on a 5400 rpm Quantum IDE drive and it was painfully slow. Try to use a recent generation 7,200-10,000rpm drive if you can. Good luck.

I learning it at school and playing with it at home. It has all the features of Pro just tons more server features. It installs no problem on a P266 w/ 64 megs ram.

Active Server runs my home network and intranet. I have it set up with Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, ICS, and IIS with support for PHP and mySQL.

It's running on a 550 MHz K6-2, SOYO 5EHM mobo with 256MB of RAM, and a Diamond Viper 550 original TNT AGP graphics card. Also has a Sound Blaster AWE64 and 3Com NIC, and an external Diamond SupraExpress 56k modem (no broadband ;(). I originally had 64MB of RAM and it ran mostly OK, but since SDRAM is so cheap now I recently boosted it to 256MB for ~$70. My disk subsystem is a Maxtor 7.2GB + Maxtor 6.4GB + Seagate 2.1GB all combined into a spanned volume. I'll probably get a pair or quad of 40GB drives to replace those at some point in the future, 160GB of disk sounds cool.

My development system is running win2k advanced server, IIS, SQL Server, ColdFusion, Apache, MySQL and PHP. It runs well with 512 MBs on a P3 933 with 10K SCSI disks. I used to run it with 256 and it was too slow to be useful... however if you don't intend to run half of the stuff that I have running, then 256 or even 128 MBs might be fine. I also agree that hard drive speed makes a huge difference. Definitely use 7200+ RPM drives if possible.

I guess I feel a little ashamed to say that I run Adv. Server on a P1 166@200 and 112 megs of ram. I have an advansys SCSI card running 2 2gig drives in drive striping. It would be great on a better system but for now this will do and it does it just fine.

Don't be ashamed! Be Proud! The people who should be ashamed are the ones who say it runs slowly on a 1GHz machine with a buttload of RAM.

i have it running on an old p2-400, 256/ram, crappy ide hd. it takes a while to boot, seems a little laggy here and there, but it gets the job done fine

the thing is, pro and server has not fallen into my lap like advance server has so i'm wondering if its worth it. i pretty much use my pc for gaming and AT!!

also, i'm gunna brush up on my nt4.0 and study my 2k so maybe it is a good idea????

I'm running Advanced Server on a dual Ppro 200 with 208 meg ram. For HDs I'm using a 6.4g and 1.2g, both older Seagates. It's not the fastest in the world but it's extremely reliable and does everything I want it to plus more. However, unless you plan on running a server of some kind, I don't recommend using it for an every day OS due to the amount of "add-ons" that come with it and the amount of processor usage they require to run.

I tried Advanced Server for about 5 days on my 1Ghz Thunderbird with 512MB RAM. It ran nicely but seemed to take a while to boot up. I don't think I needed all those extra features. Then I got an INVALID_BOOT_DEVICE error and decided to go back to Win2k Professional. Advanced Server would have been gone in 120 days or something anyways.

I think the question is aside from learning it, why run advanced server at home? I can see server maybe but advanced server?

As far as boot up being slow it all depends on what services you have started. Also it is built to run 24/7 so boot up is not an issue. I can't remember the last time I shut my server down.

<< why run advanced server at home? I can see server maybe but advanced server? >>

Because Microsoft gave out evaluation copies of Advanced Server but not Server.

A few replies to some things. Yes, unless you are running a server you'll won't need it, but maybe you'll want it anyways. Advanced Server has a butt load of features, most home users won't use. Professional, Server and Advanced Server likes, needs, whats fast HD's, 7200 & 10000 spinners, better yet go SCSI. Alot of educational books come with a elauation copy of Advanced Server, (120 dayer). You can still get on line from MS an evauation copy of Advanced Server or a CD of it, here.
