Anyone here roast their own coffee?

How much does it roast at a time? The review on sweet mariahs said that it doesn't move the beans enough during the beginning of roasting sessions. Have you noticed this?

Yeah, it doesn't make a whole ton at once, I don't know the exact amount off the top of my head, but I think like 5 ounces or so. It comes with a scoop and you can use up to 3 full scoops at once. Depending on how much coffee I drink, it lasts between a few days and a week. It's pretty easy, so the whole process takes about 10 minutes, plus time for the beans to cool down afterwards. I know you are supposed to let them rest to "degas" or whatever, but I think it tastes fine after it sits for a few hours (to cool completely first). So at least my first pot/cup might not be ideal, but the rest will be the next day or so.

I'm not sure how much the beans are supposed to move at the beginning, but there is a fan underneath the bean chamber that circulates them. You can adjust the fan speed - which is really what controls the the lightness/darkness of the roast. You can adjust the time too, but I generally just leave that be and play with the fan speed. If you leave it on low, it does indeed not circulate much in the beginning, but that would produce a very very dark roast. I usually keep it about halfway for a medium roast, which immediately upon startup you can see the beans circulating - they basically rise in the middle and fall on the sides, so make little loops.

Maybe if the beans aren't moving enough for an ideal dark roast, you could always extend the roast time and up the fan speed. That should solve the problem of the beans not moving enough - just roast them longer to counteract the slight cooling from the fan.
