Anyone here playing Quake 3 (or any other intense FPS) on a flat panel???

Just got this monitor here http://www.planar.com/monitors/CT1744Z.asp

Let's just say my career in Quake 3 is coming to an end. The ghosting makes it really hard to aim and the color bleeding is horrible. For example the red base is usually reddish but you can tell distinctly tell things apart from each other on my CRT. But on this flat panel, it bleeds (because of ghosting I presume) so it really looks like a buncha red blobs (maybe pushing it) when there is intense motion.

Lack of motion handling is one of the reasons (in addition to ghastly price) that I've never had an interest in flat panels. I doubt best buy has the best you can get but all motion I've ever seen on best buy ones is crap, whereas you spend $200 on a low-end 19" and the problem goes away (plus you have 19 inches).

well i dunno. i read some feedback on this flat panel from others and they said they notice very little if any ghosting at all.

I play Quake 3 on my Viewsonic VPD180. I don't notice any bad defects like you are describing. I have a completely digital path though, maybe that makes the difference. You are using a VGA connector, I use a DVI connection. Send it back and get a digital flat panel.

that was my theory too. but a friend of mine said dvi/analog difference doesn't equate to ghosting. if it turns out that it DOES, then i wouldn't mind sending it back. i have an AIW 7500 that has DVI so that would be no problem. can anyone can confirm this?

I didn't notice any overt ghosting when I used my Sony N80 for movies. I also have AOC LM-500 panels attached to my 'games room' PC's and neither, at first, did I notice excessive amounts of ghosting, although it was visible.

However, I haven't had anyone around to play multiplayer games with since the first session was a bit of a disaster, with everyone (me included) complaining of queasiness.

Right now I'm wondering what to do as the spare room that the PC's are in is pretty cramped, and I'd probably only have room for short 15" monitors if I ditched the panels. But if I don't ditch the panels, we can't really truly enjoy the games and I've got 4 PC's doing nothing. Catch-22!

murphy, what's the rise/fall time for the vpd180? i can't seem to find that exact #'s although i found the other specs.

I think you would have to buy a higher priced LCD that can switch faster before gaming can be a reality again/

Planar 17", DVI to my GF3 ti200...CS/Q3/DS no ghosting whatsoever. its actually easier on my eyes than my older 19". i was scared for a bit, i gave up a sony g400 and a samsung 900nf to switch to LCD. looks hell of a lot better imo.

I have a 17" Envision on a GeForce3 and get frame rates of 110-125 (maxxes out there) in SOF2 and approx 100 in MOH:AA... Of course the monitor can't even display that much but I rock at the game and usually finish in first or second in most DMs in the games... I love the LCD.
