Game is horrifying.... and awesome.

That's all anyone needs to know. Everything else is caused by your lack of sanity.

Is this game scary for someone who isn't playing it, but rather just watching someone else playing it?

My girlfriend is not into videogames at all, but loves horror films, so i was thinking of playing this game on halloween and have her by my side as an alternative to watching a horror film.

My plan would be to have the lights off and surround sound for atmosphere.

any comments on this?

I was watching my brother play and we were both spooked, though I'm sure he was feeling it more being in control of the character. Your GF will probably enjoy it.

If she gets into it, yes. Check out some of the reactions. (NSFW language).

When I showed the game to my friend, he didn't find it scary at all. But when I left him alone in the room with the lights off, he freaked out and left the room 10 mins later saying how he was scared shitless from the game.

I'm joining the "amazing game, highly recommended, could only play it for 20 minutes at a time because it scares the crap out of me, and STILL haven't finished it" crowd.

Even at $15, $20, or whatever the normal price is these days, the game is well worth it. Excellent atmosphere and definitely unique.

absolutely phenomenal game. draws emotional reaction from the player, completely immersive. morally perverse, complex characters. it ravages the mind in every way you'd want with heaps of suggestive horror making your mind your own worse enemy.

recommend play in the dark with headphones!

I thought it was a quick interest loser. It starts out all atmospheric and stuff and after 90 minutes its like slogging through a desert. Remember leaping on platforms to avoid antlions on the beach in Half Life 2? If you thought that was fun you might like doing the same jumping thing in Amnesia. I got bored with jumping puzzles some years ago. The atmospherics get old fast imo.

I bought this game from Amazon during a sale when it was like $7.

Started it up, but never actually played yet. I keep hearing how unimaginably scary it is, but I have to admit, I'm a little skeptical.

I'll have to play it some this weekend, to see for myself.

Bought and played it a little so far, lights out in the room and sound cranked to set the ambience. This game really nails horror well. I was skeptical because games like Doom and FEAR mostly rely on cheap horror (aka. monsters popping out of somewhere you just looked that was safe) and that doesn't bother me. This game actually creates a fantastic atmosphere that has me creeped out while playing.

The horror is both because of the atmosphere and the helplessness you feel because you can't just blow away whatever scary things you find. There's a very Lovecraftian vibe to it.

Why rush though? The game is on sale right now for $4. :)

Because maybe you're piss-poor, and instead of spending $4 to support the developers and own the game forever, you'd rather save a few bucks by rushing through it with shitty compressed graphics over a video stream with laggy controls.

(yeah, I don't get it either)

Do you guys feel the demo is an accurate representation of the feel of this game? I played it and while it was decent, I don't find it to be as absolutely scary or atmospheric as everyone is saying. I mean to be honest I don't find it any scarier then a couple of scarey Thief levels back in the day.

Great game , i got it off steam for $4. played it last night with the girlfriend (who hates videogames btw). 20 minutes in she took the keyboard & mouse from my hands and started playing it, 1 hour later we both were screaming like little girls and agreed to stop playing it for the night.

We agreed to continue playing it but during the daytime.

Never been that scared of a videogame before in my life, great atmosphere.

Or maybe you're just taking advantage of the OnLive deal to try out their service and it's not a really long game to begin with. Lag depends on your connection. Besides this isn't a twitch game we're talking about.

And not everyone spends hundreds for gaming rigs or even has a desktop to begin with, but more and more people are getting faster and faster connections. I think it's nice that we have choices.

In my opinion, no. The problem with the demo is that it was specifically tooled so the levels out of order, and the build-up is faster so you encounter the monsters much sooner than you would if you were playing the regular game. The demo gives you a small taste of things, but ultimately you'd want to play the retail game so you can experience it the way you're supposed to.

Also: The first level of the game is admittedly quite cheesy. Unfortunately this leaves a bad impression with many people, like "Oh wow, a door being blown open by the wind, that's pretty damn lame." But it's quite deceiving; Amnesia teases you into thinking it's some kind of childrens' haunted house game, but as soon as you write it off that way, the game pulls all the stops and scares the hell out of you like nothing else ever has. The pacing is really quite excellent.

Same here.... I found the demo more frustrating that scary, especially that water monster.

As it was said earlier, the pacing is much too quick in the demo. It gives you a good idea, but there are things about that the later game that make it absolutely terrifying. Losing your sanity, the buildup of music/ambient sounds as you run from something, managing your lantern's oil so that you aren't stuck in the (literal) pitch-black are just a few.

And the water part. Oh god, the water part.

I haven't played the demo, but the game itself doesn't quite fit "scarey", in a word, I'd say it's "perturbing". It is very atmospheric though; play with the lights off and sound up, let your mind absorb the surroundings- don't just rush through the levels. Knowing medieval and Victorian history also gives context to many things you experience and heightens the perturbation factor.

The most disturbing is not the explicit horror but the implicit: the things you *don't* see; the things your mind recreates from suggestive elements of the environment.

Thanks for the tip OP. I bought it from developer's site directly as gamersgate only accepts PayPal, and I don't like Steam. It's only a $1 more. I haven't bought a game since Oblivion and Mass Effect like 2-3 years ago, didn't even finish those. I only took a brief look and it does have a nice atmosphere, I haven't played a survival horror since Undying, seems like it could be fun.
