Looking at either buying this system for $425.99 from Circuit City or putting together my own system using better quality components (Harmon Kardon Reciever, Primus Speakers...etc)...

Is this a better bet? thanks

I have the HTS 777C, its the HTS 770 with a DVD changer. I personally like it, it's a good system for the price, I was considering buying components but that would have been much more than this system, and since I live in an apartment I really don't need anything too big. That being said... the system is spec'd to put out 1000 watts to 6.1 channels, currently I have to put it at 1/4 to 1/3 of max volume before it gets too loud. I looked around for a while, and saw good reviews on cnet for this setup. Cnet

It's a good deal for the price but if you're willing to spend closer to $1,000 you'll get much better sound quality, especially for music.

A Sempron with gf4 or an Xbox will let you play games, but the image quality is nothing like an A64 with even a 6600GT.

I have read a lot of good reviews of it from people who have it. Not sure if I've seen any professional reviews but I think I have. There's a HTiB section on http://www.avsforum.com.

It really depends on what you're trying to accomplish. A smaller system can be fine but I was not happy wth any of the small systems or small speakers systems.

If you have the option of going with the component items, do that for sure. There is no comparison. It will cost more, sure...but if you want quality.........

I'm not quite an audiophile, but I CAN regognize and appreciate a good sound system.

That said, I have a HTS 770 setup in my living room in my dorm apartment, and it's loud enough and clear enough to hear from the dorm courtyard. Volume might be important, but clarity is too, and for everything REASONABLE I do with it (TV, DVDs, CDs, MP3s and video from my TV Computer) it performs exceptionally well. I listen to a broad range of music and everything sounds great, be it jazz or hiphop.

For an out of the box solution at a VERY reasonable price, I'd advise you to pick the HTS 770 up. One of my friends liked my setup so much that he went out and bought one.

I almost bought this system a few weeks ago. it's a good deal for the money but for a little more you can do much better.
I ended up getting the following
Panasonic SA-XR25 receiver (refurb) $175
Infiniti Primus C25 center ($85 on sale at compusa)
2x Infiniti Primus C150 fronts ($60 each at compusa)
dayton 10 inch subwoofer $100

total $480 plus shipping

thi isn't the surrond sound of the onkyo, but I have no where to put my surrond speakers. I'm VERY VERY happy with the sound.

here is the thread in AVS forums that made me change my mind.

here is the home theater in a box section of the forums.

the onkyo is very popular and a great deal for the price (plus its nice to buy 1 thing and have all you need)

good luck.

i was thinkin about getting these speakers for xbox/tv/computer. awesome reviews and i actually got to see them in the store today.
only thing is, they are HUGE!!. any other speakers that are a little smaller but just as good for the money?
i'm in a small little apt.

$419 shipped... no tax? (authorized reseller too)

If you're trying to keep it under $500, this is a very good option.

Also in this pricerange, I would suggest
Fluance
dayton
denon or onkyo or pioneer

The dayton goes on sale for $99 once in a while. Depending on shipping and additional cable costs, you could get a system going for around $550.

A rocket tyke bundle is also in this range.

If you're thinking about going for a HK receiver, harmanaudio is HK's ebay name for their factory refurbished units. About a year ago I picked up an AVR-325 for about half price.

My freind got his at fry's for $399 last month. Don't know if it's still on sale or not. Yes, the Onkyo 770 is a decent system for the price.

i'll be honest, i'm looking for a decent HTIB similar to the onkyo 770. the speakers just seem a little too big for my place.
i know, jello, you can never go too big...you're in a dorm..hehe.
but the fluance system looks huge as well.

Yeah, they are even bigger... 33 pounds each for the mains and large (34"x8"x13")

The rocket tyke set I linked to has small speakers. I think if you're looking for really small speakers, the rockets are the way to go. There are a ton of threads on small speakers at AVSforum for people looking for bose alternatives that are still small to keep the wife happy 🙂
