Doctor's car explodes in West Memphis; no foul play suspected

Updated: Feb 4, 2009 12:23 PM

WEST MEMPHIS, ARKANSAS (WMC) - A car belonging to a West Memphis doctor exploded Wednesday morning when he got into the car according to West Memphis Police.

This happened at 8 a.m. at Doctor Trent Pierce's home on North Avalon Street and West Cooper Avenue in West Memphis.

Dr. Pierce was airlifted to the Med in Memphis where he is in critical condition.

A family friend says Pierce has been taken to surgery at the Med to remove metal from his abdomen.

He also has eye injuries and burns.

The family friend says Dr. Pierce went to his Lexus hybrid Wednesday morning to warm up the car when his wife heard a boom.

She found her husband lying in a flower bed in front of the house.

Police are not sure what happened, but they do not believe foul play is involved.

ATF, FBI and other investigators are on the scene trying to figure out what happened.

The car was a Lexus hybrid.

Dr. Pierce is a family doctor who specializes in asthma.

He is also the Chairman of the Arkansas State Medical Board.

He is married and has two children.

Dr. Pierce has been in private practice since 1983.

Battery explosion most likely.

I'm surprised it does not happen more often.

Edit: Nevermind, they use NiMH batteries, so they should not explode. Maybe someone just does not like this dude?

Um...when cars explode in West Memphis...it is not because of the car...have you been there before...it is like a third world.

I like how they don't specify what car exactly.

Lexus just had a recall on RWD cars with a fuel line leak IIRC

Detroit, LA, and Gary are all cities I would say similar things about

From the picture on CNN it looks like an RX 400h.

ATF is confirming that there was a bomb according to FOXnews tv.

I'm sure Lexus execs just breathed a sigh of relief...

This is kind of crazy, the kind of think you see in Mafia movies.

ROFLMAO

ah, the sarcasm is the only reason i keep coming back to this forum

Wow, I came to this thread because the question asked was if anyone owned a Lexus Hybrid, which I am looking for information on, and all that was discussed concerned a car bomb that went off in one and injured a doctor.....I guess that means the answer to the initial question is no?? (Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for the guy, but it didn't exactly relate to the question.)
