I plan to get the 970 or 980 Gaming but I haven't decided yet what to get since both definitely are good choices. I am trying to figure out if I should do dual 970s instead of a 980 :)

These new Maxwell just don't require robust power delivery since they are so much more efficient, but I would be interested to see what the power delivery and PCB looks like compared to the 970 Gaming.

Yota - You should do some benches when you get the 970 and compare it to your GTX 780 - Post some results here, as I am interested to see ;)

I have the 970 Gaming and am very pleased with it. It was slightly cheaper than other 970s at the time of ordering which was a bonus.

The card is very quiet at idle as the fans do not spin up until 60'c
Overclocked to 1501mhz boost which i'm happy with.

Now if only I was playing something more demanding than the walking dead :/

Honestly 970 SLI. You could start off with a single 970 and if you want more power get a 2nd one later. 980 makes no sense to me at this time. Look at the performance of cards like MSI Gaming 970 vs. a 980 and you can see you aren't going to get more than 14-18% more performance on average from an after-market 980. Such a small difference in performance will hardly improve your playability while a 2nd 970 will be 55-60% faster than a 980!

MSI Gaming 970 and Gigabyte G1 970 are the best ones stateside right now.

The MSI Gaming 970 is superior to the Asus Strix with better components and 6+2 power phases / 6+8 power pin connectors. If you want the quietest 970 at load, Gigabyte G1 970 is awesome

I wouldn't touch any of the EVGA cards since they completely screwed up the power circuitry (cheap components cause coil whine) and their cooler performs poorly in both temperatures and noise levels. As usual, EVGA is all hype until they release a proper Classified GM210.

I was hoping to have the card yesterday or today at the latest but apparently my card is taking a vacation around this freaking country. and we just had a shooting here leaving three people dead at the UPS center so that may delay it even more.

:'(

Was availability the primary reason you didn't grab the G1 Gigabyte or MSI Gaming 970 card? Also, I'd imagine from rough estimate that a 780 @ 1.2-1.25Ghz boost wouldn't be much slower than a 980 @ 1.45Ghz. What's your motivation for upgrading? 3-> 4GB of VRAM for GTA V and lower power usage?

yeah the Gaming was out of stock. my 780 will only do about 1188 boost max and that would take more voltage. I just run it at 1110 boost and stock voltage and even then that is only for the demanding games. no real reason for upgrading but yes the 4gb will clearly help with Watch Dogs which I plan to buy later and Wolfenstein too. and I do like lower power usage too when possible and for 330 bucks the 970 is not a bad card. of course I will eat it when I go to sale the 780 as my model is already dropped to 330 brand new with Borderlands. my best bet is probably ebay as some people on there do not pay much attention.

The only EVGA cards I would get would be the reference designed ones.

Grabbed one also. I was just looking at Newegg on a whim and saw it was available. Promptly cancelled my Amazon order. Looks like they are oos again.

well mine shipped Friday from California then when to Texas and then to Georgia. I thought great it will come here next since I am only 1.5 hours from where it was in Atlanta. nope it instead goes east to South Carolina for some reason and sits there for 2.5 days now. so when they finally do bring it where I am in Alabama they will have to go right back through Atlanta where it already sat all day Saturday. I am no logistics expert but wth? lol

EDIT: yep the f'ing card just went back to Atlanta where it already was all day Saturday. how can that possibly make sense to just carry around packages all over the place only to return right back to the place it should have been left at 3 days ago?

Toyota I don't think you will be disappointed. We are probably talking 50mhz max OC on the core vs. the gaming. You will be able to set the fan profile and temps will never be an issue regardless of what you run the fan at, so just stick with it.

I sold my 780 for $345 including shipping on ebay over the weekend. F*cking eBay and PayPal took close to $50. EBay lumps your shipping costs into their fee calculations, so be warned. Shipping cost me an actual $22, including insurance and signature confirm, so when it was all said and done I netted $275 on a $345 transaction.

damn they are getting even more greedy than before. some people get lucky with craigslist but I cant imagine too many people would be on there looking for a gtx780. plus its always been some sketchy people when I have used it to sell other things. I do need to figure out what to do so hopefully UPS is done molesting my 970 and can actually get it here tomorrow instead of back and forth to the same locations.

I had my 780 listed on Craigslist for a day or two at $300 and didn't get single phone call. Craigslist has so much seller spam these days, especially in the computer section. Try here and hardocp first.

Someone awesome is giving me a gtx460 to hold me over. I am going to wait on the 980 gaming to hit the market, see what kind of premium it has over normal reference 980's, and flip a coin vs. the 970.

lol my backup card is an 8600gt. that is not even worth fooling with the trouble of installing. the 780 card prices have already took a poop so not much I can do now until I get my 970. the 780 is going to be the first card I actually lose a huge chunk of money on and I got the best deal ever offered so I know others are really taking a hit.

I generally think yours and tviceman's upgade paths have been excellent over the years. I think GTX460/560/560Ti --> GTX570/660Ti/670 --> GTX780. Those were huge increases in performance/watt and performance. I am really scratching my head at your guys decision to lose so much money on a 780 to go 970/980. Even the 980 is only 30% faster on average at 2560x1600 against a stock 780 and I know neither of you ran a 780 at stock. ;)

Obviously it's fun to play with new hardware but I think you both could have waited another 12 months as 780 @ 1.1-1.2Ghz+ is still a fast card and is hardly that much slower than an overclocked 970/980.

And Watch Dogs is just an average game that runs like poop even with 4GB of VRAM. At least you guys will be ready for Witcher 3 and GTA V which unlike Watch Dogs, are hopefully worth upgrading for.

P.S. My backup card is a Zotac GT620, which is pretty much worthless for gaming. In 3-4 years I think I'll need to splurge on some used 970 for $100 as a backup.

Believe it or not but that's an excellent resale you got. Goes to show how uninformed the average PC gaming buyer is. EVGA Classified 780 brand new with BL: P was going for $340, while Asus DCUII brand new is $310 with BL: P, MSI Gaming 780 is $320 and the March 25, 2014 released $599 Asus 780 Poseidon is now $330 just 6 months later. Shocking how much some 780 users got burned.

The resale value on 780Ti should tank as new ones are going for $430-450!

I am buying another 290x so I can run the witcher 3 max settings at 4k.

Have you considered selling it and getting dual 970s? The small hit in resale value on the R9 290 is probably worth it because 970 overclock much better and Witcher 3 will be an NV GW titles which means it'll for sure run faster on 970 than 290X with NV specific features too.

So, any ETA on a 960 / 960 ti? I barely, if ever, game any more, so I want something decidedly mid-range just to do DC on.

Edit: While I have your attention, which Maxwell card would be good for a Q9550 @ 3.4Ghz with 8GB RAM? It currently has CF HD6870 cards. PSU is a TruePower New 750 with Japanese caps.

As I remember they were muttering about 960's being fairly soon. A month behind or something?

The 750ti still isn't at all rubbish if you don't want that much firepower of course.

My hope is that a 960 will debut at $180-200, and push the price of the 750ti down somewhat. The 750ti is overpriced for its price / performance ratio. Sure, it's power-efficient, but for those that have adequate PSUs, the R7 260X is a better deal, price-wise, for similar performance.
