It pretty much always works. I know several people that keep CB radios handy at their house and in their beater trucks.

When we had tornadoes through here, the landline phones and cell phones quit working.

I have noticed the trend that whenever there is an emergency/disaster/power failure, the cell phone pretty much never works.

CB and Ham radios can be important tools depending on where you live.

They also still work quite well on the highway for getting live information.

I've thought of playing around with that stuff, would be kinda fun. Do you need a ham license to use those? Though ham radio is something I've always thought would be fun too. It's an invaluable skill during a time of crisis. The biggest reason cell sites go down is due to lack of access during a power outage. Ex: huge wind storm, highways leading to the towers will be closed or blocked by trees, power will be out mostly everywhere including the cell sites, and nobody can get to them with a generator so the batteries run out.

Landlines go down mostly from cable plant issues (downed lines etc) but depending on how big the crisis is, the COs themselves may even lose power too. With CB/Ham radio there is less centralization so it just works as long as the operators have backup power for their stuff.

I use to use CB back in the early 90's, but I got out of it when I got on the Internet. LOL. I have several scanners and a shortwave DX-394 that keeps me busy. I tried to get my ham license, but failed. I didn't study the new book and wasn't aware there was a new book. I haven't tried getting my license since. I just might get my GMRS license though. There's a pretty quite repeater in Fort Collins I can access. For a GMRS license you just have to pay a fee no test.

10-4 good buddy, keep on truckin'!

I used to have it set up on the scanners at work but took it off because the of all the foul language and complaints about "towel heads" on there. Proved less useful than I thought it would be.

EMS is always fun to listen to. BTW, never attempt to remove your own catheter. Things will not end well. Though my all time favourite was this teenage boy who called 911 to get a broom handle removed from his butt. Always use plenty of lube if you're going to experiment.

LOL!

In Colorado it's mostly all digital now and when you go digital the temptation to encrypt is there and so it begins for my town's PD next year.
