Yes.  I'm a partner in a NYC computer consulting co.  I make the $$ because I run the company, and I'd recommend knowing how to run a business if you want to make serious money.  It isn't as easy as it sounds.
I also do tech work, not as much as I used to, and the skill I recommend for you is flexibility.  We still make some big bucks because we get our clients into new stuff.  Tech AV/control/remote is big now, security is big, internet video conferencing is huge for us - all of a sudden everybody wants it.  Email alternatives and spam control, of course; also (ironically) bulk e-mail.  Language translation, and also voice recognition software is almost ready for everyday use.  If we did database harvesting we'd be doing a lot of that (we have a close buddy we send folks to).  
I also have researchers on staff - that's new.  More information is available, so I have more people looking for it.
