basically....the score usually consists of a copland-esque theme but with none of Copland's good traits...

I don't hate them, but wouldn't go out of my way to see one either.,

like every genre, it has its good moments and bad.

While growing up that was about the only kind of movies my folks ever took me to.

I grew up thinking that was what life was really like.

Needless to say, I soon made a complete ASS of myself while singing and dancing around town.

I HATE THEM!

I love musicals...parents took me to Phantom when I was pretty young, went back a few times...sang for a while in college and ever after that I've really tried to listen to more of them.

Don't care who knows it. :p (obviously)

Brutuskend, no offense, but seeing movies based on musicals is TOTALLY DIFFERENT from seeing a musical on live stage.

Totally. Different.

Movies of musicals suck. Musicals on the stage are just magical. Les Mis, Fiddler on the Roof, Music Man, etc.

Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a quality production of a live musical. It really is so different from seeing a movie of a musical that the comparison just can't be made.

Phantom = Opera

Operas = musicals that don't suck

Well, it was my first exposure to it, okay? cut me some slack ;)

And I like operas too. One of my best SACDs is the Living Stereo release of Price singing Verdi and Puccini arias.

Musical-wise, they vary so much and opera influences can't be helped sometime.

Phantom is a Broadway musical. Operas do not use voice amplification, Broadway musicals do...like Phantom. Of course, other than that, musicals and operas are extremely similar.

operas are all singing...even the dialog..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera

musicals are regular spoken dialog, with people bursting into songs once in a while

if you like musicals, watch an Indian movie...99.9% of Indian movies are musical...you can have a gritty war drama, and all of a sudden the soldiers will start singing a song to each other...
