I use it for work but I learned through co-workers and many hrs. of dinking around ... all in all wasn't too hard from other programming language. At the same time it really depends the level of knowledge you want ...

not sure why you would want to ... unless you like running regression models on large data sets or something. Unless you think there will be a job or something in which you will use it, I wouldn't really expect that this would be something worthwhile.

Ive only seen it in University settings where there is of course a license server sitting out on the network so Id say no. But I really dont know wtf Im talking about.

SPSS is more widely used for research and education in the social sciences, not sure about other fields. They've also had Windows PC versions for years, while SAS didn't last time I checked (in '99 ).

SPSS is generally favored over SAS. Both are pretty intuitive, if you get a Windows version. Not too much to learning HOW to use it, but knowing the various statistical procedures and how to interpret results is imperative since neither SPSS nor SAS provide extensive training in statistics. You might consider Minitabs as another alternative. the Minitab site has a free 30 day test version available at their site. It is over 36 megs in size, so if you decide to download it, you need a fast connection.

Which is considered better? SPSS or SAS? I've been using SPSS for various statistics classes over the years and have a copy of SPSS 8.0. I think they're up to 11.1 or so now.

From my experience in the real world, SAS is more widely used by various industries. It's a very robust system not just for statistical purposes, but for also data mining. I have come across a variety of institutions that use SAS in some form including the government and financial companies.
