The same person I bought my Jeep and golf cart from is in another bind and has a 1998 John Deere Gator for sale. They want $750 for it, I figure I could make a little cash on it

4 or 6 wheel version...? If it is a 6 wheel and in good shape then you could make some $$$ with it... But if it its a 4 wheel version then Nah... I would not touch it...

My .02 :awe:

I havent seen it yet and not sure if it is 6 or 4, supposed to check it out tomorrow. What is wrong with the four wheel version?

It's just that the 6 wheelers are in much more demand and worth more. We use one on my fire department and it is a workhorse on brush fires.

My work uses them for the maintenance guys to get around between buildings. According to the second-shift maintenance guy in my building, they are "tougher than the back wall of a shooting gallery".

A long time ago I did park maintenance for my summer job during undergrad and we had both a 6-wheel and 4-wheel Gator. You didn't want to get stuck with the 4-wheel. It was slower and you couldn't take it out on the deeper trails if it had been raining a lot because it tended to get stuck over bad patches.

Granted, the 4-wheel Gator was gas and the 6-wheel was Diesel, which didn't help the 4-wheel from a power perspective, but overall the 4-wheel model was just less useful in demanding situations. It would make a great little utility vehicle for lighter landscape work but it's just not as suited for heavier use.

It is the 4 wheel. I posted a feeler ad on craigslist at $1500 to see what kind of response I would get and received three calls about it within a couple hours, I will probably buy it

My old place of work had a few of them. They're alright....they don't go real fast, but will hit 20mph maybe. The few times I drove them, I could smell the exhaust. It's basically a lawn mower engine powering those things. There are a few different models that have either a bed or an open or enclosed cab. Depending on features, they cost more or less, but I'm not sure what their retail value goes for.

If you buy it, check for rust.

Well it appears to be in good to fair shape...? You might make a few $$$ with it but I do hope it runs good...? Also the paint spotting shows...? Best of luck with it though...

True dat. for every desktop/laptop I sell, I get 3 emails asking for specs (already included in the ad) or asking if the item is still available (listing states ad stays up until its sold).

GL with the sale, Sawyer. I saw a vintage Gator similar to this one on the trails yesterday during my ride. Passenger had the biggest grin on his face of anybody that we passed :D
