Anyone here just starting a career or schooling in IT?

I have been debating about what education if any I want to get and what type of job I would like to do for some time now. My true passion is computers/networking. But I know that field has kinda died out or just gotten overcrowded. But after much research I think it may start looking up again over the next several years. So I am thinking of heading in that direction both schooling and career wise.

Just wondering if anyone else has just started a career/schooling in the IT area? If so what are you studying or what area did you get your job in?

I have a Management - IT focus degree. I'm 10 months out of college and I've had a full time job for 10 months 😉

I had been working all the way through college though, so I got 4.5 years of tech support experience before moving to network admin.

Just remember the word "networking" is not just about computers. Once you get your foot in the door, you need to get to know everybody, especially your vendors. To get ahead in IT you need to have friends.

Yeah I know that networking is a big part of it.

I am IT at a law firm. I have been working here right out of school for about 2 years now. I am not the admin but more of a help desk/maintenance guy. (tons of downtime) I want to learn more about the network side of things but I am also finding that I don't really want to do this for the rest of my life.

What kind aof education do you guys have?

I am trying to decide what to do for schooling. I will admit that I don't think I have the ambition to go back to school for 4+ more years to earn a bachelors degree. So at most I am thinking of getting an associates of science from Columbus state community college. Maybe some certs also or maybe just certs and some good hands on knowledge.

Columbus state offers an AS in what they call networking technology. I woudl also like to focus on areas such as security and wireless networking.

I'm in college for an associates' in PC Support now, planning to get a Bachelor's in Network admin. I co-op through my college now and there's way more open positions than we have IT students to fill. I don't see the IT field as crowded.

None really, I dropped out of high school, got my GED, spent 10 years in manufacturing, was a computer hobbyist that was at the right place right time. I did however get my MCSE, but I have no college behind me.

Also in MIS. I've worked tech support help desk type stuff, interned at a large corporation (still workin' there), and have an interview for an intern/co-op position that could last 8 months with GE tomorrow.

I don't know what I want to do as far as a career goes. Retire, probably.

Im in college right now, going to get my A.S. with a certificate in Computer and Information Systems. Maybe go on and get A+ certified and Microsoft certified.

So some of you are getting associates as well. I thtink that may be my best bet. Maybe sometime in the future I will go back and get a bachelors, but i just don't want to wait that long to get some form of education.

Good idea. Getting an associates' will give you time and experience in the field which will help you figure out what you want to do. I wouldn't have thought I wanted to do networking before starting college, but now I know it's what i want to do.

I'm an ex-ITer as well. I'll give you some advice, even if you don't want it. 😉 My IT skills weren't all that great, but my people skills and diplomatic skills were well above average.

Set yourself apart; make yourself someone people can work with. I would say avoid the stereotype of the industry.

I wish you good luck. I don't regret for a minute leaving that industry.

I appreciate everyones advice, thanks

What reasons are you guys laving IT for? Just bored with it, no longer like doing it, not getting paid enough, what?
