I've been wanting to watch the entire series from the beginning but it's so many disks and different generations I don't know where to start.

So what's the first series of disks? Hell, how many series are there?

start with robotech. Read the books. the cartoons are very very painful to watch.

they can't be that bad can they?
Ignore him, he's clueless.

Watch SDF Macross. Excellent stuff. You'll have to read subs but it won't matter, it's so good after a while you won't notice.

Robotech pales in comparison. You can pick it up afterwards and see what I mean.

So is that the beginning of the saga? I want to see how it all begins.

There is no "saga". Robotech is a cobbled together version of 3 seperate anime shows for US audiences. SDF Macross, Genesis Climber Mospeada and Super Dimensional Cavalry: Southern Cross.

Watch them seperately, you'll appreciate them so much more.

As a longggggggggg time Macross fan, I can tell you that there is only 2 series worth your time.
The orginal from early 80s and the latest Macross zero.

for starter watch the macross movies, I think there is 2 movies from the orginal series. After that you can try to find the orginal TV series, the cartoon may not look very good but the story is superior. I still watch the TV series once a while after 20+ yrs.

After that download the Zero.

I don't particularly think the movies are even worth watching to appreciate the series. Trying to find it for cheap is the problem.

Mospeada and Southern Cross on DVD can be had for cheap now. I paid a bit for them when they first came out. Not bad, but not Macross.

I agree the movie is not even close to the TV series but they did a good job to on it, for starter that don't want to go through 18cds or can't find the TV series it is a good start.

Macross plus has absolutely nothing to do with the Macross Series. It's a completely unrelated story but it's still awesome.

Robotech has much more philosophy and thematic elements. I'd actually recommend watching it over Macross. Every different part of Macross is just a different stage of a big battle for Earth in Robotech.

I like the Robotech that came out in the 80s. It had a good story (I was a kid!) even though the animation was horrible. I once watched one of those Macross animes in college with a friend and it didn't make any sense... there were some guys in experimental fighter jets and singing robot pop stars that hypnotized audiences and turned them into vampires that feast on feces instead of blood... maybe some of that is made up.

See this is where I disagree with most people. I like the americanized TV show Robotech over the Japanese counterpart.

Carl Macek did a good job adapting it to the american audience. Anime fans will have a field day nitpicking everything that is wrong with Robotech. Oh what irony, because Robotech is the very show that is responsible for popularizing Anime.

I would recommend anyone to watch the entire Macross portion of Robotech, episodes 1-36. My sisters and their boyfriends who absolutely hate Anime got hooked on it. Very few cartoons put that much effort in character development and let's face it Americans love soap operas. The giant robots/mechas and aliens are just afterthought in the grand storytelling.

With the exception of Miyazaki's work, very few Anime will have the level of success that Robotech had or the impact. Anime freaks that complain about weak and dated animation should realize that style over substance doesn't always capture an American audience. Robotech actually gave Anime a good name and high expectation. But afterwards, most of the imports proved nothing more than stylized violence and adult orientated films with very limited plot or character development. I can't help it but understand why most people think Anime is crap now.

Robotech/Macross shall always remain a classic. Watch it, give it a chance, and understand why.

To answer your question, Arkitech. The series consist of 3 different parts: The Macross Saga, Southern Cross, and New Generation. By far and away, the Macross Saga is the best. New Generation is so so and Southern Cross is very forgettable.

The animation quality is not all crappy and dated. It's actually very mixed. You can tell that some parts they spent more time on and other parts they hurried through. Some good example where they spent a little more effort are in the episodes "Farewell, Big Brother" and "Forces of Arms".

Having only seen the American (Carl Macek's) Robotech series, I have to agree here. Also, you have to remember that at the time this debuted on American TV, this was probably the BEST-looking animation around. Sure it's dated now, but this series is 20 years old.

And definitely the only kid-oriented afternoon TV series where people died left and right.

Loved it as a kid... want to rewatch it because I remember very little of it now but I have much trouble getting over the horrible dubbing and dated animation...
