Anyone here have experiences with Sony's repair service?

I was just wondering because I'm pretty sure my 80GB MGS4 bundle PS3 has something terribly wrong with the Blu-ray drive. It squeaks and squeals when I insert games into it and many times it won't read them at all requiring me to eject and insert until it finally reads. I also think one of the USB ports just went dead all of a sudden.

I'm planning on sending it back for repair next week. My question is, are they competent enough to fix the console/send an replacement back within a reasonable amount of time? Has anyone had any issues with their services? I'm asking because I've heard mixed reviews about Sony's service. Thanks.

My drive died in my mgs4 bundle a few months ago. Sony sent the coffin overnight /w overnight return to them and I had a replacement ps3 (not repaired) in 4 days. Might be a bit slower now with the holidays and all.

Don't forget to do a backup before you ship it out =)

In another thread I was given an idea and im curious if this would work. Could I go on ebay or into a pawnshop etc and buy a broken 60 gig ps3 and then send it in for repairs? I would be more than willing to pay the 150 dollar fee if they can repair/replace it with a 60 gig replacement. Its the only way I can see getting a 60 gig in working condition without paying an outragous price.

If only the drive died couldn't you just replace the drive?

My MGS 80 had a bad "video card/output". Anything but Blu-Ray movies and PS3 (disk) games had problems with the video.

Blu-ray, not hard drive =)

My friend went though a repair (out of warranty) with his 60GB PS3 back in November. Took about 2 weeks from the time it died to get the coffin, and get the PS3 back. He actually got the same PS3 he sent in back with the Blu-ray drive replaced. All of his saves, etc... were still on the hard drive when he got it back. He said it went very well, and is very happy with the customer service. He had to pay $150 for the repair since it was out of warranty.

I've had to replace my PS3 twice (first time for broken USB ports, second for a completely dead system). They even took the console in the first time without a receipt! I just said I won it in a drawing (which my brother did, actually, but we shared it), and they waived that for me.

Each time has taken roughly 2 weeks from start to finish. Everything has been quick and easy. Just make sure you backup your data.

fail

It took about one week to drop my dead PS3 off and receive the same one, but repaired. That was about one year ago, and I live only an hour away from the repair facility.
