Anyone here have an Onyko Receiver?

For some reason the onyko recever I am trying to setup will not display any composite (yellow cable) inputs. It almost feels like it is defaulting to finding the digital (component) inputs, and not even trying the composite. I know the source works fine, as it displays on our TV's composite input just fine. Am I missing something?

what video connection are you using to connect your receiver to your tv?

you probably need a composite output to your TV. Depends on the features of the receiver. Some receivers don't convert between different inputs like component, s-video, composite. So if you have a composite input, you need a composite output as well.

It's always a good idea to thoroughly read the manual of any receiver.

Well, I am trying to hook my cable box (which only has RCA and coax out) to the receiver. I have it plugged into VIDEO 1 (the RCA ports)...but the receiver won't recognize it. When i plug the yellow cable into the green component port, it displays the image in black/white....which leads me to believe that not only does the cable/box work fine, but the receiver is only looking for component inputs.....but I need it to look for the RCA inputs for Video 1.

:(

What kind of video cables are you running from the receiver to the Television? I had an SR503 that would not convert between formats, so that if the input was composite, it would only be output from the receiver's composite output.

Which Onkyo receiver do you have? I am thinking that your receiver is not converting the composite input into component output.

That doesn't work. What model onkyo do you have?

im connecting it to my projector via component cables.

Read my post, then read the manual.

*sigh* that did it.....

thanks guys!

Just sucks that now i have to go buy some 20ft composite cables for my setup....I thought it'd just run everything through the component cables...guess I thought wrong.

Sounds like a perfectly reasonable excuse to get a new receiver to me.

Before you do that, answer the question asked before; what Onkyo model do you have? The receiver may let you convert the composite to component via the user interface.

EDIT: If you happen to have an Onkyo 804, check out page 44 of the manual. It instructs you on the setup for composite or S-Video and how to have the receiver output the signal over a component output.

Sorry, I should have mentioned in my PMs that the 504 didn't do upconversion to component.

You could just switch one of the component plugs on both ends to the composite video input/output on both ends, they're both just RCA cables in the end. Saves you the trouble of buying and running a 20ft cable I guess...

Sounds like a lot of work to switch inputs :p

You realise that there is zero functional difference between composite and componant cables, right? Just that componant has two more cables in the bunch. Just use the existing componant cables and plug them into the composite outputs and leave the two extra plugs dangling.

If you like music you'll switch to coax. toslink sucks.

why do you say that? I've always heard toslink is the way to go for audio

Oh noes, not this again :p

toslink can help eliminate ground loop issues, if you have them
