How about getting a degree for the many jobs that require one without specifying what it has to be in? I am majoring in philosophy and I want to be a cop. Departments don't give a fvck what your degree is in, if they even require one. Just that you have one. I picked philosophy because it interests me and if I hate being a cop, I will be a philosophy teacher.

If you guys think a philosophy major is a waste try debating a philosophy major. Probably the some of the smartest guys/gals you'll ever meet.

Or at least some of the most pretentious and self-aggrandizing people you'll ever meet. It depends on which one you talk to.

True, but then most smart people are.

The formal logic courses are good training for a programmer, the Kant and Wittgenstein classes not so much.

(The "informal logic" / critical thinking classes are worthwhile for everyone, and should be a prerequisite for posting in P&N.)

Yeah, this is what I was referring to. When I went to school Critical Thinking was required, regardless of your major. Don't know if its still like that these days.

That's not really true. If an intelligent person was truly smart they'd realize their error and correct it by treating people as equals, even if it was only to serve their own goals. People don't like to be treated as inferior, so if a smart person is to make any progress in dealing with people they'll speak on their level, as it would be the smart thing to do.

I dunno about that. Usually the smartest people in any group are the biggest as$holes, because they know how smart they are. The corporate structure protects them, as their attitude would normally get them beat down.

I've found that people who rely solely on their intelligence often overlook common sense, which limits them severely. They may be protected within their environment, but get them out among people and they're like lost children. Not very "smart," is it?
