I've been looking at taking out a lease and there is an absolutely killer lease special on the base Impreza. Basically it's 0 down and about $200-$230 a month depending on your lease term.

The looks are iffy, it may be a sport sedan but doesn't really look like one. Honestly that's probably why the lease is so cheap since there isn't a lot of demand. Still, the lease is essentially cheaper than a Civic or Corolla or Sentra and I think the Subaru is a higher-level of car. I do want to take it out for a test drive but am trying to solicit some input first.

Someone explain the benefits of leasing vs. owning?

The way I see it, if you spend 200-230 / month anyways, why not have the car YOURS when your payment period is done rather than having to give it back or pay more to keep it?

Sure, you pay a little more to OWN the car, but in the end, as long as you buy a decent car that maintains its value somewhat, you will have something you can atleast sell to make some money back on.....

However, my 2003 Hyundai Sonata is worth less than I owe on it now...... SUCKS. I won't buy a Hyundai again :-(

because $200 will get you a kia, at best. If you want to own that subaru you're looking at at least $300/month over 60 months.

Anyway, it's a nice car. Not particularly fast, but sufficient. Gas mileage is not great, but I'd take one in a heartbeat over a corolla/civic. That's not even up for debate. It's more car than they could ever hope to be.

It's not a *little* more. Assuming zero down and $220 a month for 42 months, that's $9240, which excluding finance charges associated with owning is less than half the value of that vehicle. If I were to own that vehicle in the same 42 months I'd have to pay nearly $19,000 which means I'd be paying over $400 a month plus a large down payment. Now, my situation is unique to me, but I am close to graduating college and I highly doubt money will be as tight three years from now as it is now, since I'm employed as an co-op making considerably less than an EE with a B.S. In my situation, I feel a lease is superior. Your situation may be different.

They are fun cars, definately not a WRX but great none the less. Some WRX owners crack me up when they look down on the 2.5RS, if it weren't for it you wouldn't be driving around in a WRX right now.

Get a wagon though;p

Great car, my brother has a 05 2.5rs. Everything you get is true subaru quality but it can be had for way under 18k and you don't have to fill it up with premium.

It's a bigger, nicer car than a Impreza if you want a little more room for comfort.

Everyone has a fuggin' Altima. I'm sorry, its just a totall different car. Its a boat compared to an Impreza.
Everyone has six altimas. I basically fvcking detest them now because of that.

Use your $9k in planned lease payments and buy a used car instead. Use it for a few years until you're in a position to purchase the new car of your choice, and then sell the used one and use the cash as a down payment on the new one.

$9k will buy you a decent used car, last time I checked.

If you're CERTAIN that you aren't going to have any big lifestyle changes in the next 3 years, then feel free to go for a lease. If you end up moving and/or getting a job transfer that gives you a long commute, however, you will end up getting raped in mileage and wear and tear charges when you turn the car in.

Not to mention that you own nothing when the lease is over, unless you pay whatever inflated buyout price they want. Keep that in mind before leasing, too.

Nice car. The RS was the "sporty" version before the WRX came out.

Leasing Vs Owning? Basically, lower payments and you never own it. *BUT* if you like the car you can buy it out at the end of the lease, and sometimes the buyouts can be pretty lucrative. I actually know people that leased it and bought it at the end as it was cheaper all around than buying it from the get go. At least if it turns out to be a lemon you aren't stuck with it and you can hand it back. As long as the rates are close, I'll probably lease from now on.. but I use it for business too so it is somewhat easier for me for taxes and allowances.

Whatever you decide though, you could choose far worse for a car, that's for sure. I say go for it.

I have a 2001 2.5RS and I love it. Very reliable cars. Fairly easy to work on. AWD pwnage.

I went from a 2001 Civic EX to my RS... I wouldn't call it slow. You have to get a manul though ;)
