Anyone Here Have A 4K TV/Monitor That They Use As A Gaming Monitor? 21:9 On 4k

I was planning on buying a really good quality OLED/4K Hybrid TV at the end of this year to use as a monitor. Considering that lesser known brands like Seiki are already selling 4k TV's for 700$ and the trusted brands have 4k TV's on sale are going for 2500-3500$.

I am hoping Sony and Panasonic releases their OLED/4k Hybrid TV's at the end of this year so I can get it on the Christmas sales. Hoping that they will release a smaller version at 40-55inches and the price would be 2000-4000$ depending on the size, thats assuming the price of it when it is on sale.

Still, I do prefer using a 21:9 aspect ratio for gaming because all the games I play are compatible with it and you get a much wider field of view.

Is it possible to use the 21:9 aspect ratio with a 4k TV/Monitor? Has anyone tried? Would there be black bars if you used this aspect ratio with a 4k TV/Monitor?

Many of the popular new games support 21:9. Games like The Olrd Republic MMO, BorderLands 2, Guild Wars 2 etc, more are played in that video.

None of those Articles said anything about using it on 21:9.

Still, wouldn't a TV/Monitor that has a native aspect ratio of 21:9 be better for playing in 21:9? Wouldn't you have a larger field of view than if you played it using 21:9 on a native 16:9 screen?

I am thinking there would be black bars playing a game on 21:9 on a native 16:9 screen.

I assume all 4K TVs uses HDMI as input. And no GFX card got HDMI 2.0 as output yet as far as I know. That might give you a 30hz limit.

This is what's on my wishlist for the next upgrade. http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=860-BBCD 23.8" 4K IPS display with 99% AdobeRGB and 100% sRGB, 10 bit panel 1.07 billion colors, DisplayPort 1.2 does 60Hz 4k with MST (works fine under Windows, currently not supported properly in xrandr on Linux, not idea on Mac). Look around can find it for around $1100, MSRP is like $1300. 188 PPI, which is an amazing pixel density, beats out any other monitor available for purchase right now anywhere.

4k is 16:9.
If you use 21:9 on a 16:9 monitor, you have a choice of either black bars top and bottom, or a very stretched/distorted picture. Doesn't matter what resolution the 16:9 monitor is, it will be stretched on a 1080p or 4k monitor.

21:9 on a 16:9 monitor will give you the same FOV as 21:9 on a 21:9 monitor.

21:9 on a 4K display will be a strip of 1645 pixels.

In other words, 21:9 on 4K will be "taller" vertically than 1600p. Not too shabby.

And it will be taller than the 1080 vertical pixels of existing 21:9 displays, so I think it's better. I bet you'll eventually train yourself to ignore the black bars, and just enjoy the wide aspect ratio while enjoying lots of extra vertical pixels.

I really hate black bars. It is a real drag that all the 4k televisions at 21:9 are all going to be huge and 5000+$, 105 inch televisions are overboard.

LG is not the only company going with this, many other well known brands are making their own 105 inch 21:9 4k Televisions.

Why can't they make smaller ones? I would really like to buy a 21:9 50-60 inch Television to use as a Monitor for PC gaming/Internet Browsing.

Weird, the article itself points out how those 21:9 "4K" TVs are really 5K. It would be silly from a marketing standpoint to call them 4K, when they offer more. 5K is a nice way to help sell them, so why not call them 5K?

I've grown to prefer the black bars on the top and bottom, not the left and right. So I think I'd prefer a 16:9 4K display that occasionally letterboxes the top and bottom for super-wide movies, and not a 21:9 4K display that usually letterboxes the sides for most movies but only gets rid of that letterboxing when showing a super-wide movie?
